I like to create a meeting day before the tutoring begins. That meeting day consist of me seeing where the student I am tutoring is at. After seeing the subject that student is struggling with, I create weekly packets for the days I do tutor the student. That packet will be practice for the student to do infant of me as an "exam". Weekly packets will be given all the time until that student masters the concept.

I generally start with the basics to try and figure out where a student is experiencing any gaps in their knowledge. Once I can fill in those gaps, I feel that students generally start to get the bigger picture and can put together the more complex information on their own. I am a guide for students. I do lecture some but I expect the students to really think hard about problems they encounter in the material and try to work them out as much as they can before assistance.
