I believe that in order to help a student you must first be able to connect with him/her. That could mean understanding a student’s background, researching the latest video games or playing softball after class. For example, several of the girls I worked with at the JEI Learning Center, spoke very little English. Often they got frustrated and just sort of shut down -- stopped responding. At first I tried to have them draw pictures but when that didn't work, I asked them to show me something from home. They folded cranes and strawberries out of the paper that I gave them. If they can realate the information to an actual happening, they are more likely to remember. In terms of test preparation, aside from learning the information it is important to work on test-taking skills (relaxation, focus, etc.). I worked as a tutor all through college at Iowa State University. I tutored Math (up through Trig), general and organic chemistry, and statistics 101. These were the main classes I taught, but I also did Spanish 1, ecology, and food science/nutrition. I also tutored some high school students in all subjects but mostly math and science.
I love helping people. I believe that no one is stupid just some people are better in some areas than other people. I enjoy helping people learn because I love seeing the "light bulb click on above their head" when they finally grasp a concept. As a recent CSU-Pueblo graduate with a mathematics major and a double minor in both physics and economics, I feel I have plenty of education for this position. If I could quit my day job and become a high school math teacher, that would be my dream come true. I truly enjoy tutoring. When I teach the kids, not only do I help them work through problems, but I also give them ideas of what will come, where they will need the current subject matter in future years, or even ideas that a particular topic is important (so they don't learn it just for the test).
My electrical engineering degree was pretty much a math degree by default. In addition, I'm currently pursuing actuary certification. Actuaries are the statisticians in the insurance and finance world. I've been tutoring for 7 years, and have had many successes. One of my students earned a perfect 800 on the SAT math.
