My teaching philosophy has developed through my experiences as a high school physics teacher, as a teaching assistant in the Department of Physics at Texas Tech University, and through tutoring individual students. In my experience, high level of student participation is important. First, it allows students to at least start thinking towards a problem in their own way, and later start debating over what they have learned in the classroom. I have been a teacher at Mount Vernon High School for the past three years. I have had a very successful career as an Engineer/Plant Manager. I changed careers and I am now Teaching/Tutoring. I teach/tutor High School math at an inter-city school (IPS). I also work for a Huntington Learning Center working with high-achieving high school students trying to improve their SAT and ACT math scores.
My teaching style is my tutoring style as I do mostly tutoring. I work with students to determine the missing math procedures or concepts. When a student misses a question, I do not simply show them the solution or correct answer. I solve the problem with the student (without looking at the answer) by discussing the approach (procedure) together. In this way, we share the approach to the solution and weak spots are revealed.

I enjoy math and try to make it fun for the students. We do hands on activities which are fun for them, but also gets them to understand the concept. I use Algebra wrap-ups, Algebra tiles, "Hands-on- Algebra" program. I have creative lesson plans, for example, which uses a deck of cards to play an Integer War Game. While in college I took every opportunity to help friends and classmates. I enjoy understanding a subject and then helping another understand it as well. A Little Bit About Me...

I first try to determine what level of knowledge my "students" had. Then, building on that, I would add layers until the group I was with understood the material. I would check with them frequently to make sure they understood what we just covered and I allowed questions at any time. If necessary, I would back up and try a different approach. My goal was to make sure they understood the material, whatever it took.
While I have no "official" teaching experience, I was frequently required to teach other members of the various teams I was on as well as people from other groups. This involved everything from tutorial presentations to a large and diverse group down to individual tutoring at the table in my office. Most people told me I was pretty good at it.
