I am an essentialist in philosophy, meaning I want the student(s) to learn material that is relevant to their experiences and that they can find useful to their lives. I want to engage them in their learning so that they can use many different learning styles. I want to show them that learning is something they can do for the rest of their lives and that they benefit from their own hard work. Everyone can learn, as long as they have the desire to learn and are guided by someone willing to help them learn.
Growing up in a family that did not value an education, I saw education as a way to make a better life for my self than gangs, drugs, and violence. I am the only one in my family to graduate from high school, then college. I firmly believe that education makes a person better by pursuing it.
