My comments on tutoring Elementary Math : Courses taken at MSU pertaining to elementary math, and an array of strategies to teach

I can teach in any style that suits the student. I am flexible with whatever excels the students learning the most.
I have taught a large array of children and adults, anywhere from a 2nd grader struggling with reading to adult Burmese refugees. I have the patience and flexibility to successfully work with anyone. I started tutoring when I was around the age of 13. I taught a young Korean girl English, where I would have to create my own lesson plans. While I attended Okemos high school, I partook in volunteering experiences that dealt with tutoring. I found each day of working with my students both challenging and rewarding. I do not believe in a "one size fits all" approach to education; rather I feel that programs should be developed/adapted to meet the needs of each individual. Educators must fit the program to the child, not fit the child to the program. Whether or not a student has a disability, it seems to me that the goals are basically the same: to help our youth to develop their maximum potential, whatever that may be, and to grow to be competent, productive, and independent young adults.

I went to school at EMU with the intention of getting a doctorate in Physics, to teach at the college level. I ended up getting a job in IT at the University, and found I enjoy this just as much. While a student, I volunteer tutored for the Society of Physics Students, and I tutor all the student employees I have when they are taking physics classes. Although my degree is in music education, most of my teaching was done in Christian schools. I have taught math (through Algebra II), English, grammar, history, and science. I would be proficient in any math through Algebra I and any English, grammar or history through grades 12. I have taught grades 3-12.
I have high expectations of students, but I adjust my "teaching style" to the student. For the struggling student, I usually begin at a level that they can easily perform. From that platform, we progress step-by-step until we find the area of difficulty and why it is there. When we master that, we move on. There are a variety of techniques to use, depending on the problem and the student, but the general expectation is that they can do it.
