I like to give a diagnostic test at the first meeting to assess the client's familiarity with the topic, then, customize lessons to fit her or his needs. I aim to build a strong foundation, then, increase difficulty of concepts as client's comfort level with the topic increases. I use materials that are challenging, but not intimidating. I try to put the difficult concepts of mathematics and chemistry into words and experiences that the student can understand. In the words of one of my tutees I teach "Barney-Style". In other words I talk in words they can understand whether I'm tutoring a 4th grader or a college student. It is my goal to make the subject less scary and more fun.
