As a recent student, I am very familiar with what it feels like to be in the position a lot of the students are in right now. At the same time, I understand the best method about how to approach understanding the material in the easiest manner possible. The key is patience and practice. I firmly believe the best way to teach is to attempt many examples, rather than strictly lecture. If a student can see the pattern inherent in many of these problems, it makes understanding the initial concepts much easier. Generally in my experience I have a higher level of understanding of basic principles than my peers. This puts me in a position of frequently helping others understand subtleties of the material. There are many different ways of understanding any one concept, it is just a matter of finding one that relates to the particular student's experience or thought process. I obtained a B.S. in engineering from Webb Institute in 1968, entered the U.S. Coast Guard and thereafter obtained a JD in Law from SUNY, Buffalo. I tutored underclassmen in calculus while at Webb and taught seventh and eighth grade math and science in a small catholic school, part time, while in law school. Following law school I was a prosecutor for six years after which I became a hearing officer for NYS OCFS. I retired from state service about one year ago, at age sixty-two.
