A Little Bit About Me...

As a parent of 4 children, I have a love for teaching in a variety of settings. I gain a sense of the students' interests and tie every subject back to something they are interested in. They need to "see" what difference their studies make. Learning needs to be a love, and I let my love for learning help to create that desire in the student. Once the desire is strong, the knowledge base grows easily. Patience and positive energy have served me well in tutoring younger students, and more mature students also seem to respond well to this approach.
As an engineering graduate from BYU, I have extensive training in physics and math, as well as a solid foundation in how to apply these studies to real life situations. Much of my teaching style I learned while at Apple Computer in one on one computer teaching sessions. I tend to be a very enthusiastic and encouraging anyway, but Apple taught me an additional patience and a lead-learning-out teaching style that promotes self-discovery and avoids simply giving answers. Though it is geared towards adults, I have since found that adapting the patent and deliberate pace of LLO teaching to the learning level of younger children is effective and fun for both myself and the student. My teaching/mentoring/tutoring style is tailored to the student. I do not believe their is a generic teaching style that will help all students. Most people I have worked with have difficulty understanding a couple of key points and once that obstacle is overcome learning accelerates until the next obstacle is reached.
