I believe all students can learn and use my training and experience to adapt my teaching strategies to individual learning styles. Using student interests can help direct teaching that improves students’ enjoyment of learning. For instance, when teaching reading to boys I have found that they often like to read more factual reading material about sports, science, history, mechanics, etc. Student interests change as they get older and reading material needs to be age appropriate. Students thrive on positive re-enforcements, but the best motivation is personal success. Finding ways for students to feel needed and appreciated, helps to find learning more relevant and worthwhile. I have been teaching for over twenty years, primarily Middle School Language Arts. My primary experience lies with Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Program. This program was established to promote and nurture minorities interested in pursuing a career in the sciences and mathematics. I was involved in the program as a fellow. This position required me to mentor a group of younger scholar students. The position required me organize events (such as tours of science industries and resume building session), establish program outline for the school year, lead mentoring sessions, and facilitate study sessions. Teaching is a wonderful experience! My teaching style is laid-back, I'd say. I like having conversations in order to determine how someone learns. I think people learn best when discussing the material and really think it out before they start creating something. Guiding a student down the path of their own learning style is important because they will need those skills in the future when they go off to college or start a career on their own.
