A Little Bit About Me...

Every one can learn. Sometimes an individual learns in their own unique style and finding that style is the key to teaching them. The best way to teach someone is to guide them when they come to a road block, rather than to give them the answer. The amount of pride and prestige that comes from having figured out a problem on their own is the most important thing.
I've always loved to read, I inhereited it from my father who got it from his father. I'm an avid writer as well. I currently write book reviews for The San Francisco Book Review and the San Diego Book Review. You'll find samples of my work at http://www.thereadingcan.blogspot.com . I really feel I can help youth and young adults learn to read. Currently I work with individuals who have disabilities to find and maintain work. One of the most interesting aspects of teaching is how different people process information. Oft times it is difficult to find a teaching style or method that can be equally useful to people of different learning types. I have found that teaching methods common to experiential educators, common practice in such disciplines as SCUBA diving, First Aid/CPR, Martial Arts, Art, etc., can be successfully applied to virtually any academic discipline. The process leads the student to the discovery of concepts based on practical demonstrations by the educator with as much repetition as necessary for the student to achieve comfortable mastery.

I believe in teaching to the student’s style of learning. If convention works use it. Picking up on a student’s interest and intergrading the educational experience is essential. In other words if a student is interested in horses, the classroom should be moved to the barn. If math is the subject in question then measuring food would be an excellent way to learn fractions. In the past I have written several programs for my sons to use to learn both math and spelling. I find the instant response from the programs was a very effective tool for them to learn. They were more willing to study as they could use the computer.

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated with a Bachelors degree in Physical Education, which means I took several teaching classes. I have worked with youth for almost 10 years, working in schools, summer camps, and most recently as an director of (3) afterschool programs. I worked as a para-educator for 3 years in a school in central VT, helping tutor a 2nd grader and a 7th grader with their academics
I enjoy working with youth, ever since I was in college I have had jobs where I worked with children. I think their fun, and great to be around. I really enjoy helping them excel in whatever they like to do sports or academics. I very flexible in working around schedules, and I easy going and easy to get a long with.
