A Little Bit About Me...

I believe a good instructor does not force students to become good at data recall, nor does he/she simply lord knowledge over the students and assume an ivory tower or bully pulpit mentality. Learning is an active process, one in which the student must be intimately involved. My methods draw on a relationship with the students that identifies their strengths and weaknesses, and uses each to improve the other. My goal is to make students effective at identifying what helps them learn best, so that they can become ACTIVE in the learning process.
In my undergraduate studies, I volunteered as a high school athletics coach and took advantage of opportunities to lead college lectures in History, American Literature, and Philosophy. As a graduate of a writing and publishing Masters program at DePaul, I learned and practiced the art of writing in many genres including Non-Fiction, Poetry, Travel Writing, and others. I also took a course on Teaching Literature, where I learned about pedagogy and what it takes to teach literature to students. Throughout my undergraduate and graduate years of schooling, I have taken many classes that helped me work on my writing skill and production. I also spent two summers as an Instructor for a writing camp working with campers from ages 9-14; I ran a classroom where I created unique lesson plans each week in order to engage the campers in writing activities while keeping it fun in a summer camp setting.
