Education Should Be An Experience!

I pride myself on being innovative and tailoring teaching to the needs and interests of my students. An ability to relate the material to one's life and take ownership over your learning is the core of my teaching philosophy; therefore, I teach in a manner that best enable my student(s) to maximize this goal. Learning should be an experience, and I strive to develop activities and approaches to make this experience a pleasant and engaging one. My classes are fun. The activities are not wastes of time, and the end result is measurable growth in the subject area. My best quality is my ability to adapt and think on the fly. This means that I can address concerns and issues as they manifest; also, it means that I am not locked into one way of doing something. I love working with all children, and all age groups. I am here to help find a unique way to present the material to your child to help them understand it in language that they can understand. I am patient, easy going and considerate. My overall goal is to help young students realize their potential, and instill a love of learning.
I believe strongly in providing children an opportunity to learn material in a way that will resonate with them personally. I believe a good instructor does not force students to become good at data recall, nor does he/she simply lord knowledge over the students and assume an ivory tower or bully pulpit mentality. Learning is an active process, one in which the student must be intimately involved. My methods draw on a relationship with the students that identifies their strengths and weaknesses, and uses each to improve the other. My goal is to make students effective at identifying what helps them learn best, so that they can become ACTIVE in the learning process.
In my undergraduate studies, I volunteered as a high school athletics coach and took advantage of opportunities to lead college lectures in History, American Literature, and Philosophy. I tutored with the Writing Fellows every Thursday at Schoolcraft College when I was working towards my Associate's in Liberal Arts. I helped students write and edit their papers. The primary focus was English but there were a few Social Studies/History students thrown in there. I graduated in April 2009 from Eastern Michigan University with my Bachelor's Degree in Electronic Media and Film with a Minor in Creative Writing.
I would usually look the paper over and point out problems with grammar and spelling and tell the student why they weren't working. I believe in the mantra "show, don't tell" when it comes to teaching. I'm pretty laid back and willing to work at whatever pace the student is comfortable with. I don't move on until I feel both of us are on the same page. I think the history of the English language has a lot of really interesting trivia.

I have high expectations of students, but I adjust my "teaching style" to the student. For the struggling student, I usually begin at a level that they can easily perform. From that platform, we progress step-by-step until we find the area of difficulty and why it is there. When we master that, we move on. There are a variety of techniques to use, depending on the problem and the student, but the general expectation is that they can do it.
Although my degree is in music education, most of my teaching was done in Christian schools. I have taught math (through Algebra II), English, grammar, history, and science. I would be proficient in any math through Algebra I and any English, grammar or history through grades 12. I have taught grades 3-12.

A Little Bit About Me...

My style has always been to encourage questions from the student or with the many people who have worked for me over the years to challenge the status quo. I encourage individuals to stretch the envelope and to seek different solutions rather than accept what has been done before. I have also stressed that there is never a bad question or wrong to think outside the box. For example I have always asked students, "Why study history?" What I relish now,is that many respond, "To learn how we got here." Communication is the key and it is very important for the student to trust and respect the relationship that develops between student and tutor. With out this trust learning becomes very difficult.
In college I tutored at one of the high schools while monitoring study hall three days a week. After graduation I joined the Peace Corp. I served in the Tonga Islands in the South Pac ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I love working with younger people who have a passion for writing. From a young age I enjoyed writing and because I have invested time in learning about and working on my writing, it makes me happy to see a younger generation love it as much as I do. I hope to inspire those who write to keep with it and support them in their endeavors. I wouldn't have enrolled in writing programs had it not been for the teachers and professors who supported and encouraged me. Writing has been my way of expressing myself and I would love to bring that out in others.
As a graduate of a writing and publishing Masters program at DePaul, I learned and practiced the art of writing in many genres including Non-Fiction, Poetry, Travel Writing, and others. I also took a course on Teaching Literature, where I learned about pedagogy and what it takes to teach literature to students. Throughout my undergradua ... read more
