A Little Bit About Me...

I like to get a student to the point where that student can apply basic skills to complete a problem. Once the student can apply those steps, I then like to move onward to get the student to be able to understand the reasoning behind the solution to the problem so that the student can use these steps to solve similar types of problems. I have spent a lot of time as a soccer referee and coach as well as a chess team coach working with youth.
I have spent over 30 years working in various positions in the computer industry. I returned to school to gain a Mathematics/Teaching degree (without certification) from the University of Utah. I have taught for a single year at West Wendover HS in West Wendover, NV. During that year, I taught basic applied math classes as well as Algebra I, Algebra II and Pre-Calculus classes.

My favorite thing about teaching math is watching those students who once believed they were incapable of doing math become successful in mathematics. I love working with students, particularly at the secondary level, and believe that math is something to get excited about. I firmly believe that students should be guided on a path of discovery when learning math and they should explore where different math ideas came from and why they work. Students should also be given ample practice in order to master their skills, but not blindly following algorithms. I believe that if students are shown why the math works, they will be better able to perform necessary tasks on homework and tests without resorting to memorizing steps. I also believe that it is my job as the teacher to continue learning and progressing myself.
I began teaching algebra and geometry at a junior high in the fal ... read more

I think that I can teach what I really know, and Mathematics are the topic that I know the best, so with that in mind I am able to share my knowledge to anybody, since I am confident with the topics I understand, adding to this the fact that I like to teach something that I have done since I was in elementary school with my close friends and after to teach to adults in school for adults.
As a graduate students at the University of Utah at the Economics department, and also as a Civil Engineer I have been exposed to many professional presentations to explain technical projects, as well as theoretical topics especially at graduate level where different economics perspectives have to be explained. Finally as a Civil Engineer I have had the chance to develop my math skills with courses such as: Calculus I, II, III and Differential Equations, and Statistics.

I have always loved working with mathematics and numbers. I experienced different teaching styles in high schools and found that when you work directly with students they learn the best. I believe working on the blackboard and playing games with the students is the best ways for them to learn in classroom stitutations and working one on one in tutoring them
As a master level graduate, I learned that I love to gain knowledge, the more I learned the more, I wanted to help other learn as well. I have always had a love for numbers and formulas and have enjoyed teaching accounting, algebra, finance, & economics.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is actually very fluid and relates specifically to the people that I am currently teaching. Every person learns differently, as such, a wide range of teaching styles is required to teach a wide range of people. As a tutor, I was able to develop my teaching skills in a wide range of areas (including: analogies, step/progression, fundamental-based teaching and increasingly narrowed focus) that have helped me teach many different people with many different backgrounds not only math, but also physics and biology as well.
While a Biological Sciences major at Brigham Young University Idaho I took several different math courses that were above and beyond those required for my degree. I excelled at each of the classes that I took, and was actually recruited by my calculus teacher to become a statistics and calculus tutor at the university math lab. I worked for 4 consecut ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style might be a bit unorthodox but it is something I have acquired from past teachers and tutors. I have not helped or tutored in a while but I believe I have an easy and simple approach to it. When it comes to physics and chemistry, the math can be learned over night, the concepts are most critical. You can't read a problem and interpret the question word for word. You have to find a way to relate it to real life and what you see everyday. A spinning disk becomes a truck tire, a sound device becomes a sub woofer. Things that you can relate to.
I have yet to complete my senior year of studies at the University but I will be done by Spring 2011. I am working towards my first Bachelors Degree, BS in Physics and will continue with school after until I get my MS in Chemical Engineering. Physics and Chemistry have always come easy to me and I know that because of this I can ... read more

I love seeing people learn. I love the look in a student's eye when they think about something in a way they've never thought about it before. I love to facilitate that type of learning because it brings me great satisfaction. I especially love to work with children because they are so willing to learn and they absorb information so quickly. I am grateful for amazing teachers and dedicated parents who helped me with my education when I was young, and I want to pass that on to other children.
Ever since I was a young girl, I have loved learning. This passion for learning new things has given me the motivation to earn my Bachelor's degree in Humanities (emphasis: Music) as well as my Master's degree in Comparative studies. As a college student, I understand the difficulties and frustrations that arise from feeling ignorant at times. It is important to me, when I teach, that my student feels reassured when he or she does not understand something. First, I explain principles on a level that I initially judge to be adequate for the student. Then, if the student does not understand, I come up with a more simplified explanation, and continue in this fashion until the concept is grasped. Throughout this process I always feel that it is very important that the student understands that there is nothing wrong with not knowing how the task at hand is completed or even approached.
In 2003 I returned home from a two-year church service mission in Romania. My time in Romania was mostly spent in the homes of ordinary families where I taught parent and child alike the principles of Christianity. Upon my return I at ... read more

I worked as a math tutor while attending Weber State University. I have been certified a master tutor according to CRLA guidelines. I have tutored beginning Algebra through Calculus 3. This experience has helped me retain the knowledge I have acquired as well as help form a great foundation that has served me well as I earned my BS degree in Chemical Engineering.
I have been trained in using the Socratic Method of teaching which entails using questions to prompt the students memory and help them further be able to solve problems on their own. I also work out examples to further illustrate concepts to help them think through the problems they are working on.

A Little Bit About Me...

When I was attending Weber State University I tutored students in mathematics, and later on I actually had the opportunity to teach a math class there. I've had the chance to train employees at work too. The most fun I've had with teaching, though, is when a friend or relative is referred to me for help, and I can help that person understand the material one-on-one.
I can explain difficult things and make them easy to understand. When I taught a math class at Weber State, my students would ask me why other teachers wouldn't just 'say' things so simply like I did. It felt very good to be so complimented, and it was exciting to see them understand those math concepts for the first time. I'm also told I have a lot of patience. I appreciate that as well, and believe that is important.

A Little Bit About Me...

One of the most fulfilling feelings in life is to see a person’s face light up because of a concept finally understood, and that is what I look forward to seeing in those whom I tutor. I love learning. I love science. I love explaining how things work. I am easy going. I am patient. Thank you in advance for your confidence and trust.
I have earned a Bachelors of Science degree in physics, and minored in mathematics at Weber State University. During my years in college I was a physics lab assistant for a year. Some of the duties as a lab assistant were to answer students’ questions and help them understand the fundamental principles of physics. I also worked at a Skills Enhancement Center on campus tutoring mathematics. I tutored students taking classes from basic algebra to calculus. I am working for a company, and have been for over ten years, that utilize my math skill ... read more

When it comes to math, there is always more than one way to attack the problem at hand and each method appeals to different students. I usually start off with one and I can quickly tell if another would be more effective for each individual since I've noticed everyone has different styles of learning. I do believe everything mathematical can be taught and learned - there are no lost causes when it comes to math.
I received my BS in Electrical Engineering in December. I was one of two who graduated under the Honor's Program and maintained a 3.72 GPA. I've been tutoring math ever since my second semester in college and even while I was in high school. I've taken Calculus 3, differential equations, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics and received an A in each of them. I have a great deal of experience along with a sound background in mathematics.
