A Little Bit About Me...

My experience in tutoring began in high school when I volunteered for my local library, in a program aimed towards improving students’ reading ability. Having had considerable difficulty learning to read myself, I felt it was important that I attempt to pass this on to others. When I entered Knox College I was focusing on English, and ended up helping my fellow students with writing and editing their papers.
I have always sought to lead rather than force something upon the student by rote. Most important is to present the information in a way that is both interesting and memorable. It is my experience that people remember things better when they truly understand the process, and have reason to listen to the explanation.

More About This Tutor...

My teaching journey has taken me to many different places and I've had the opportunity to work with all ages of students from 3 year olds to college-age. Specifically I have experiences with students who are from culturally and linguistically diverse backrounds and also with students with special needs and learning disabilties. In the last few years I have tutored students one-on-one in organizational skills, studying for tests, writing and editing.
I find that students (myself included) learn best when they feel safe and that they can be successful. I believe it's important to teach in the zone of proximal development and build on a student's interests. The best way to do this is begin with activities that are fun and if it's possible, to access the creative side of the brain during learning to help students to relax.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a retired Boulder valley teacher and I have taught from the preschool to college level for over 20 years. Most recently, I worked as an ESL and reading teacher. My training was modeled after reading recovery and involved one year of supervised teaching one-on-one with children who were struggling readers. The goal of this training is to help children work with their strengths as readers, rather than focusing on their weaknesses. Children learn the strategies that they need in order to be successful, independent readers. The work I do with them is very focused and begins with a thorough diagnostic assessment of their reading abilities.
