A Little Bit About Me...

I am a retired Boulder valley teacher and I have taught from the preschool to college level for over 20 years. Most recently, I worked as an ESL and reading teacher. My training was modeled after reading recovery and involved one year of supervised teaching one-on-one with children who were struggling readers. The goal of this training is to help children work with their strengths as readers, rather than focusing on their weaknesses. I find that students (myself included) learn best when they feel safe and that they can be successful. I believe it's important to teach in the zone of proximal development and build on a student's interests. The best way to do this is begin with activities that are fun and if it's possible, to access the creative side of the brain during learning to help students to relax.

My experience in tutoring began in high school when I volunteered for my local library, in a program aimed towards improving students’ reading ability. Having had considerable difficulty learning to read myself, I felt it was important that I attempt to pass this on to others. A Little Bit About Me...

Although I have no formal teaching experience, we all learn and teach everyday in our lives. I am very intelligent and want to pass that on.
