I began my tutoring experience in the fall of 2009 with a program called Breakthrough Manchester. It serves underprivileged students in the area who do not have the resources to succeed. They ranged from grade 5 to 8. With Breakthrough I worked one-on-one with students as well as in a classroom setting in which I conducted my own lessons. I helped students with a variety of subjects such as science, math, social studies, geography, and even organizational skills. I worked with children from all walks of life, including kids with disabilities. During my time at Breakthrough I also spent two days a week tutoring mentally disabled adults. I was more of an instructor than a teacher. I was a day camp counselor at Solway House parent/child resort in Saugerties N.Y. I instructed kids how to swim, dive, play various sports and gave dancing lessons to the guests. As a high school student I tutored 7th and 8th graders in an after school community center. I was one of a few staff at the University of Connecticut to instruct graduates and staff in the use of the various electronic facilites available to them.

My goal is to help your child achieve success. I explain real-life applications of the subject (i.e., metric system--repair of foreign cars.) I encourage questions and dialogue. I use praise when warranted but am firm on deadlines and honesty. Aware of attention span, I take appropriate breaks or switch to another subject. I remind him to read and follow directions and to check his work over before he hands it in.
