I began my tutoring experience in the fall of 2009 with a program called Breakthrough Manchester. It serves underprivileged students in the area who do not have the resources to succeed. They ranged from grade 5 to 8. With Breakthrough I worked one-on-one with students as well as in a classroom setting in which I conducted my own lessons. I helped students with a variety of subjects such as science, math, social studies, geography, and even organizational skills. I worked with children from all walks of life, including kids with disabilities. During my time at Breakthrough I also spent two days a week tutoring mentally disabled adults. I was more of an instructor than a teacher. I was a day camp counselor at Solway House parent/child resort in Saugerties N.Y. I instructed kids how to swim, dive, play various sports and gave dancing lessons to the guests. As a high school student I tutored 7th and 8th graders in an after school community center. I was one of a few staff at the University of Connecticut to instruct graduates and staff in the use of the various electronic facilites available to them.
I feel children are very self-aware and are very vulnerable to positive and negative feedback. Therefore, no matter how little progress is made, praise them. It's impossible to build a house on a poor foundation and I believe in establishing strong, fundamental skills of drawing and painting first. These basic skills then allow a student to branch out according to their individual interests, from cartooning to design to landscape painting and on and on. I earned my degree in newspaper journalism at Syracuse University, one of the finest schools in the country for this program. Since that time, I have worked as a writer, editor, journalist and reporter for several major organizations, most recently as a content producer for Monster.com's Career Advice.
