Math is one of my top subjects! I am especially good at helping kids who are struggling with the basics of math, especially if they are weak on their multiplication facts. That is essential, and I have many strategies and tricks that help a person learn them faster and better. I also am strong in teaching both long and short division. I spend time on decimals with how to change back and forth from decimals to fractions. Then I spend lots of time on fractions, so that later when they go into ratio, proportion, and percent they have no problems.

I am very friendly and try to put my students at ease by reviewing things to see what they already know and making them feel successful right from the start.
I taught lower grades for 33 years in San Jose, CA. I have a master's degree from San Jose State College. I have tutored for many years, have been a substitute teacher in both Camas and Washougal schools, and taught in the Adult Education program at Clark College for 4 years to adults who needed never finished high school and needed to get their GED.

A Little Bit About Me...

My learning and teaching preference is reading/writing. I adjust to students who are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners. I like to use examples to drive concepts home, to make them relevant to my students' lives, and to ground these concepts in reality. Examples include, say, how geometry is used to create movie 3D special effects, or how algebra is used in sound editing in a sound studio. I also intersperse jokes and puns to help the student relax and be assured that (s)he is in a safe, secure environment for comfortable learning.
I have been tutoring subject listed on my resume for about 11 years. Currently, I tutor 1) primary grade children in language arts, 2) one adult in computer programming skills (algorithms, MS SQL Server 2008, Java), and 3) through a couple of tutoring companies. I conduct tutoring in groups, one-on-one, in-school, and in-home. My educa ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I love teaching and working with children. I love English. I love seeing the expression in the eye of a student who finally understands the concepts. I know what it is like to struggle and get frustrated. In Jr high I was tutored in English and math. Once I understood the concepts there was no stopping me. I would love to help your student the way someone helped me once. I am a patient, kind and loving mother. I believe English is the corner stone of education, and the key to future success. Many times a loving teacher, who takes the time necessary, is all a student needs to succeed.
As an English major I have always enjoyed and excelled in the field. I was top of my class in high school. I also aided in the kindergarten class.
