Tutoring is one of my best skills, its just something I do well. I’ve tutored k-12 for Amsterdam, Gloversville and Johnstown in almost any subject, I have a strong math background particularly in algebra. I’m a good writer and do some freelance writing online at times. I have some experience with computer applications such as Photoshop, MS Publisher and PowerPoint. My BA. degree is in economics with a minor in business, I’ve completed some courses in graphic communications and have taken psychology on a graduate level. I’ve also homeschooled my own son for a year. He recently posted a 4.0 GPA at FMCC.
I enjoy tutoring enough to do it for free, which I have done for my friends from time to time. I’m a friendly laid back person who loves to learn and help others learn, particularly in a one on one setting. I’m quite good at breaking a subject down into an understandable step by step ... read more

Over the years I have found math and reading/writing to be important skills and they were amongst the most useful tools I had ever learned. Over the years it has served we well and I enjoy teaching the material to younger people while explaining to them its benefits, but also allowing them to have a skill that will serve them well. I have a great deal of patience, compassion and understanding with younger people because I realize that everyone learns at different rates. My other goal is to relate math to everyday examples in life to indicate how useful they can be. Also, I am considering this route because several people have recommended it because they believe I would make a good teacher. Thanks for your consideration.
While I am not a teacher by profession, I spent much time in the academic support center at SUNY Cobleskill as a freshman tutoring students in different kinds of ma ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I think it is more important to understand the student than to understand the material. Don't get me wrong - as a teacher I always re-educate myself to the material if need be - but I feel my real strength as an educator lies in finding a new way to teach the same concept. If a student is failing to learn, it is less often the material itself and more often the way it is being presented. Finding a new way is something I have practiced in school and at BOCES, and is my greatest strength as a teacher.
I hold an English degree from a program that largely overlapped with Education - basically, I have studied teaching as a student at college. On the other end of the spectrum, I have been a substitute educator for Capital Region BOCES for 3 years, working with teaching professionals on short-term assignments. Through this experience I believe I have gathered a good deal of craft in the a ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I began teaching as a college sophomore at MIT. For 9 years, I taught primarily Multivariable Calculus, but also single-variable Calculus, Linear Algebra, and several writing courses. Since graduating, I have been involved in various volunteer tutoring efforts. My minors are in Math, German, and Writing. I happen to be a black female, the first to earn bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in Mechanical Engineering at MIT. I am happy to work with anyone, but I might be a particularly meaningful match for a minority or female student. In addition to tutoring, I would hope to serve as a "can-do" example for someone who might not have dared to dream big enough.
I believe in the "practice makes perfect" approach, especially when it comes to math, science, and language study. That said, I also believe that practice can be interesting, fun, encouraging and reinforcing. I would hop ... read more

As a graduate from SUNY Albany with a Masters in Literacy I take education in reading very seriously. I have been tutoring local students for the past three years. I have also substituted in the Capital Region for the past four years at various grade levels. In 2008, I taught 6th grade English Language Arts at Hoosic Valley Elementary school. I believe that literacy can be inetegrated within any subject and can be made accessible for any student regardless what there strengths or weaknesses may be.
I enjoy teaching children of all ages. I believe that a good teacher is one that can reach any child regardless of how that specific student learns best. One thing that I have found that works best is finding out the many interests of a student and then using those interests to engage the child. Once a child is engaged in the material, teaching is the easy part. I believe modelin ... read more

I have been an amateur tutor ever since high school, when I tutored classmates for free. I spent 6 years as a nuclear trained electrician in the US Navy, 10 years in academia where I studied and taught psychology, biology, and communications, and the past 10 years in retail management. I took it upon myself to conduct impromptu training sessions in many different areas of study while in the Navy, and actively helped shipmates engaged in external study programs. I implemented a tutoring program for pre-med and pre-vet students and others while a member of Beta-Beta-Beta (the National Honor Society for Biology) at Southern Illinois University. I have used my teaching and training skills in innumerable situations as a retail manager. I am a life-long learner and actively acquire and absorb lectures on cd in many disciplines through The Teaching Company.

I obtained a B.S. in engineering from Webb Institute in 1968, entered the U.S. Coast Guard and thereafter obtained a JD in Law from SUNY, Buffalo. I tutored underclassmen in calculus while at Webb and taught seventh and eighth grade math and science in a small catholic school, part time, while in law school. Following law school I was a prosecutor for six years after which I became a hearing officer for NYS OCFS. I retired from state service about one year ago, at age sixty-two. In addition to helping my two sons, as needed, in science and math (both became engineers), I have recently tutored my step son in physics and calculus, tutored a high school student for his SATs, and tutored a college student in intermediate algebra.

I teach others by learning and adapting myself. I love finding new and creative ways to explain familiar concepts. For my degree I had to take a year of chemistry, which I immediately fell in love with, even though I had hated it in high school. I found myself tutoring the other students in my class for fun and even took two organic chemistry classes as electives just because I thought it was so interesting. I consider my late discovery that I love earth science and chemistry to be proof that a seemingly difficult or impossible subject can be made easy and fun with the right point of view and attitude.
I hated science and math when I was in junior high and high school. When I asked my teachers questions, they didn't give me the answers I was looking for. Luckily, I got into a great university and found out, after taking a few core classes, that I actually love science. Once I rea ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Besides having a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics, I have a strong analytical/technical background that enabled me to succeed in physics, civil engineering, and electrical engineering electives that I took as part of my undergraduate studies. During a ten-year period during my professional career in the telecom industry, I trained managers and technicians in a number of subjects. I also developed training curriculums and prepared training materials for my classes. The subjects involved classroom training in use of a Verizon inventory management system, quality assurance seminars, and informal mentoring workshops for new managers on improving their leadership, interpersonal, communications, and conflict resolution skills.
My teaching style is engaging since I like to get the student or students involved in learning and practicing the material as much as possible. I am anima ... read more

I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to possess the drive and desire to want to achieve academic success. Having a love of learning and understanding what it takes to transfer that love to young people is a gift and my purpose in life. I believe in helping individuals to become the best that they can be. When you are on target in your purpose, it is like breathing - easy. With that said, my area of expertise is math up to algebra. On the elementary level, I can assist with all fundamental subjects but again math is my love. If they are willing to try, I'm the right person. Positive encouragement goes a very long way.
