As a tutor, I was encouraging, supportive and sensitive to my students' feelings. For example, I normally met my students at the library. One student kept missing his initial session. I figured out that he was too intimidated by the library itself to meet me there. So, we had regular lessons in the park, where he felt comfortable and was therefore receptive to learning. I would say that it is a little more toward laid back. Being over 6" tall, stocky, pushing hard, being an ogre, hard-nosed, that isn't going to work for me. People have a tendency to be a bit intimidated and fearful because of my size. I will use it to my advantage if it is necessary, or becomes necessary, but I've found being a little more quiet, reserved and coaxing the student to initiate the discussion is a little better. Ask leading questions, adjust and proceed, based on their response.
