My comments on tutoring Creative Writing: I specialize in Creative Writing tutoring and have been tutoring it for over 20 years now. I am very good at breaking down the process and making it easy to understand. First, I'll show you how to write a dynamite opening that grabs the reader's attention: "Jesus!" Fubar exclaimed as he recoiled, trembling in horror. "I didn't know the gun was loaded." Then, I'll show you how to write to avoid wordiness like Hemingway, to be more descriptive, and to keep focus and relevance! As Dr. Seuss says, "The writer who breeds / More words than he needs / Is making a chore / For the reader (who reads)…" I promise that your writing will flow naturally and that you will get top grades. Your reader won't want to put your story or poem down once he or she starts reading! I'll also show you how to get more length out of your writing the right way -- by being more descriptive. For example, many students make plain, simple, undescriptive statements like "The narrator thought about the events in his life." Pretty dry, right? Something like that may vaguely suggest to the reader that a chapter in the narrator's life is ending, or that the narrator's life is about to end. It's a bit more descriptive if we introduce some imagery: "The narrator watched the sunset as he thought about the significant events in his life." Now the sunset symbolizes that the sun is going down on his life and that he doesn't have much time left. But we can still be much more descriptive with our word choices. Adverbs describe verbs, and adjectives describe nouns, so we can skillfully choose words to convey regret and anger and get the point across for the dying narrator by describing the key nouns and verbs in the sentence: "The narrator wistfully watched the crimson sunset as he thought about the significant events in his life." The pictures we paint are worth a thousand words in Creative Writing. There are words for all writing occasions, and I will help you discover how to convey just the right tone and say just what you want. I don't just write your papers for you -- we do that together -- and you learn how to write for yourself -- a skill that serves you over and over in the years to come. Your first hour of tutoring with me is free (even if you don't continue) so you can see how much tutoring is really going to help you.

If you watch me closely during our sessions, you can see me secretly paying keen attention to you and how you learn best. For example, you might say, "It LOOKS like they want me to factor here." And I'll think, "Aha! LOOKS. Maybe you're a visual learner and like to SEE things explained and SEE examples. (About 80% of students are visual learners.) On the other hand, you might say, "It sounds like they want me to factor here." And I'll think, "Aha! sounds. Maybe you like to HEAR things explained, and you're a keen listener and like to hear things described clearly and specifically. Or maybe you'll say, "I FEEL like they want me to factor here" (as you tap the problem with your pencil). And I'll think, "Aha! FEEL. Maybe you learn by intuition and need to just jump in and work a problem or two with me step-by-step and discover the pattern of what's going on and pick up the FEEL of it. So... ... read more

I thoroughly enjoy teaching students at various ages and stages of development. I consider myself to be very creative, and I try to give the students as much hands-on experience as possible. I am constantly seeking feedback from the student in terms of how well I am presenting the subject matter, so my methods of teaching will vary. I am always open to new ideas. Failure is not a word in my teaching vocabulary. I will always find a way to reach and teach my student in such a way that learning and application are maximized. After graduating from Virginia Tech in 1973, I decided that I would enter the field of public education. After 6 years of successful and rewarding experiences in secondary education, I decided to return to college and obtain a Masters Degree in Education. Upon receiving my Masters in 1984, I taught at the post secondary level in both Virginia and North Carolina.

I really enjoy being around kids and helping them learn new things. When you teach a kid something and they finally get it, the sight of their face lighting up is priceless. I believe that one should teach using a variety of methods because all kids do not learn the same way and each individual method shows something new each time. I believe that all kids can learn so much if they work as hard as they can and put forth maximum effort. I think it is very easy to learn/teach using as many hands on examples as possible. I graduated from Liberty University in May 2009 with a BS in Accounting. I am currently and have been a substitute teacher in Bedford County for the 2009-2010 school year. I have substituted for grades 6-12. I have been a football coach at Liberty High School for 3 years and I have been a track & field coach at Liberty High School for 5 years. As the Head Trainer for Order Entry and Customer Service for ten years at J Crew I taught detailed customer service training for new hires. I also implemented and taught the Train the Trainer Program within the Lynchburg, VA Region 2000 community. I created a Remedial Training Program to raise skill levels among associates and taught Telephone Etiquette and motivational training. I also revised the Order Entry Manual to be used for all new hires. I have been told I have a three dimensional style of training. I teach in a way that every style of student can (eventually) get it. I have taught both children and adults in the various positions I have held through my life (camps, schools, employers and church). Nothing is more exciting than seeing the "light bulb moment" go off on an individual's face!

I believe an interactive approach to teaching is the most effective style of relaying information. Lecture with constant questioning and feedback has proven effective for my classroom situations in the past. I also have had great success with modeling the writing process in a step-by-step procedural format. My students and I both enjoy using a multimedia approach to improving all styles of communication. Identifying and focusing on the best learning style of each individual student is my key to success. I have accumulated 25 years of teaching experience, both in the classroom setting and on an individual basis. I taught English, remedial through college prep levels, in public education for 16 years, and then I moved into private school education for 9 years. I have especially enjoyed working with foreign exchange students, specifically German, Korean, Japanese, and Hispanic. I also have

I love to work with students of all ages. I am a patient teacher and try to tailor my teaching style to the progress of my student. I prefer to promote understanding through the use of work sheets, tutorials, and real world examples, rather then simply relying on memorization. I have a good sense of humor and believe that constructive learning environments are both challenging and light-hearted. I studied creative writing at the SC Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities in Greenville SC. There I studied poetry, play writing, grammar, editing, fiction, and creative nonfiction. I won two national scholastic writing awards for my writing. I also studied at Rice University which is a highly selective university in Houston Texas. I majored in sociology and also took many intensive English classes. While a student at Rice, I tutored several of my peers in both sociology and english. I

I am a senior studying Animal and Poultry Sciences at Virginia Tech. I have always had a personal passion for education and have enjoyed spreading the joys of learning and understanding to my peers, siblings, and friends. I excel in the subject areas of Math and Science, however have extensive writing skills. The greatest reward one can achieve is to see the smile on someones face when they have found success in understanding something they felt impossible. I feel that there is no single method to learning, instead it is each individuals character that defines their own learning methods. I like to seek out what drives an individual to help them find their own passion about learning. With everything I do in life I go 150% and never give up. I hope that I can spread this outlook and motivation to others and help them find the true value in their education.

I am a Certified Public Accountant with over 30 years of accounting and finance experience. Although I have no formal teaching degree, I feel that I would be an excellent tutor. First, I have successfully trained many employees over the years. Second, my two sons, ages 21 and 19 graduated numbers 2 and 1 in their high school classes, respectively. Now, both are "straight A" students at the University of Tennessee. Here, I feel that I have lead by example. Finally, my personality, while being friendly and patient, is also that of a highly motivated "over achiever" who loves to help others. I feel that I offer the best of both worlds, a love of learning in an academic environment as well as real-life experience in the business world. I love teaching and helping others, especially children. I believe that there are "no stupid questions" and that all children can learn. I think that one of m

What works for one student may not work for the other. One-on-one instruction is a great opportunity to find out which learning-teaching style works best for the individual student. I am patient, friendly and flexible. At the same time, I am driven to see tangible progress in my work, so that, ultimately, the student achieves his or her goals. Being a teacher is not a job for me; rather, it is who I am. Teaching is my service to others. If you looked over my resume, you would see that I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, a year of experience as an adjunct instructor at a medical career college and two years teaching English as a Second Language at a private institution. However, if you looked over my life, you would see that I have been teaching, tutoring and mentoring my entire life. I have worked with children of all ages and I enjoy making a difference in their lives. Helping them understand that they can create their own futures by setting goals and working hard towards them. I care about the well-being of my students and I believe that every student can do what they put their minds to. My philosophy is that every student can do better than they are currently doing. If a student has an "A", I want them to have an "A+". I am a motivator and I believe that I can build relationships that will bring about positive change in our students' lives. As a graduate of Liberty University, I understand the importance of having a strong foundation educationally. With a background in business and analyzing numbers, I understand many math concepts that will benefit your company's goal. As a recent graduate of Kansas State University, I am excited for the opportunity to teach reading and writing to all students. During my experience throughout the last four years, I have been fortunate enough to work with students of all ages and from all backgrounds that have enriched my experiences as an educator. As a professionally trained English teacher, it is my duty and personal endeavor to help all students in reading, writing, and grammar. I chose to become an English teacher in order to pass on my personal admiration for the subject to future students. I hope to receive the opportunity to do so. The most important aspect of education that I have learned is that it is not about teachers making a difference; it is about helping students make a difference. Knowing this, I strive to help all students succeed using the most efficient learning strategies possible. Technology is a g

I have a great deal of experience training fellow employees and have devised the system of show them once, let them do it once while talking them through it, and then let them do it once without assistance. This system also translates to teaching. The last step is the most important; it forces the student to think for him or herself and instills confidence that the problem is not beyond his or her level of understanding. It is very important to teach students how to figure things out for themselves – probably the most important lesson I learned at UVa. If a child knows how to utilize resources such as the textbook, example problems, and the internet, then he or she will be able to work independently through a tough problem. Education has always been extremely important to me. To me there is no greater feeling than finally grasping a difficult concept and I love helping someone else

I taught 7th grade Language Arts for six years when I lived in Florida. I collaborated on the team that created the Orange County curriculum for teaching writing to the middle grades. This curriculum is still in use today. I worked for the Princeton Review as a tutor doing SAT preparation both privately and in a classroom setting. This was in preparation for both the verbal and math skills sections. I believe that students of all ages respond to humor, honesty, and respect. Subjects in which that students have difficulty can be made accessible to them by demonstrating to them the humor in learning something hard and the fun of conquering the subject. Learing should be something students enjoy.

As a lifelong student and advocate of learning, I achieved a GPA of 3.75 upon returning to university classes as an older adult. I have many years of working in business, coaching and mentoring in several fields, which include accounting and business practices, such as customer service. While attending college, my happiest moments arrived with exceptional grades on research and theory papers. In the team environment, I am usually the "editor" since it comes so naturally. When teaching, I believe in the "wow factor" so the student can really see how much fun learning can be. When they are amazed with the world of knowledge, it makes their learning and my teaching so much fun! I am here to help students set and achieve their highest goals.
