Portuguese is one of my top subjects!

As well as being a certified TESOL instructor, I graduated from Smith College with a bachelors degree in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies and Latin American Studies. My studies focused on language learning, reading, writing, and cultural history and studies in Spanish and Portuguese. I studied abroad in Lisbon, Portugal for one semester and was in intern for a summer in a sustainable village in the jungle of Panama. Before college, I did my gap year in Belo Horizonte, Brazil where I lived with host families and attended high school. I have traveled to 25 countries and have vast experience using my language skills in daily life and immersing myself in the local culture.

A Little Bit About Me...

My goal is to excite students about learning. I encourage my own children as well as those I teach in the classroom to focus first on finding at least one concept in each lesson that attracts them and about which they would like to know more. This philosophy helps to eliminate the student's perception that "I hate math" or "I'm not good at science." Secondly, I use text-to-self and text-to-world relationships to get students to recognize the broader application of subjects. Finally, I work hard to reach students with various learning styles (verbal, auditory, visual) and always make time for one-on-one reinforcement or re-teaching for students with special needs.
