During my time at Colorado College, I worked as a chemistry tutor helping my younger peers traverse the challenging General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry course loads. But because of CC's rigorous alternative schedule--where you take one class at a time, for one month each class--it's necessary to learn to pick up new concepts very quickly, I often found myself being asked for help in classes I myself was taking. I never minded this, because being forced to explain something is the best way to ensure your own understanding of the concept. In 1975 I had been teaching tennis for the City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department for a year and elected to attend a teaching clinic at Coto de Caza California conducted by the Vic Braden Tennis College. Since then I worked for the City of Boulder as a tennis instructor for 7 more years and I coached tennis to individual tennis players, mostly promising junior players, for an additional 4 years. After a short period of retirement from tennis, I took a job with the Bureau of Prisons in Englewood, Colorado, as a tutor in their Education Department.
