I began as an English major then graduated in Physics with honors, cutting edge research experience in both academia and industry, as a published writer, photojournalist and poet. As a result, I can understand why some very intelligent people who perform well with the arts can sometimes be frustrated by the math and sciences, and vice versa. I have previous experience as a private tutor and trainer in industry settings. I have researched alternative energy and biomedical devices so I can answer the question “Will I ever use this?” by citing real world examples. I teach physics, multiple forms of math and writing. I enjoy watching a student’s face light up with that “Now I get it!” expression.
My style is patient, respectful, fair and adaptive. The goal is to find what works well for the student, not take a rigid one-size-fits-all approach that a classroom may employ. I start loo ... read more

In my past I have taught many years as a tennis instructor and ski instructor. I also taught at a Federal correctional Institution in Englewood, Colorado in their Education Department in 1990 and 1991. i tutored inmates for their 8th grade equivalency as well as several others through their GED's. In 2002 through 2004 I also was the training officer for Star West Aviation. My teaching style was, and always has been to use humor and patience to bring my students along and to achieve where they had failed in the past. I found, especially in the prison system, that people achieve best when you make the work interesting and also within the student's ability. No one wants to feel stupid and there is always a tremendous joy in even grown adults when they "get it."
In 1975 I had been teaching tennis for the City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department for a year and elected to a ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated this spring with honors from Carleton College. For my senior thesis in Math, three of my colleagues and I designed a Challenge Math curriculum for fifth grade students. Together we compiled our lessons into a book, and once a week each we taught a small group of students. When I moved to Boulder this summer, I began tutoring CU students, adults taking online courses, and high school students. I also have experience tutoring for the SAT, ACT, and GRE.
My teaching style depends on the student. Some students need me to explain the subject material to them rather than read it from the book, while other students benefit most if they work through a problem and then ask me a question when they get stuck. Though regardless of the student, I always ask questions as we go, because I know that students learn best when they engage with the material.

A Little Bit About Me...

I recently graduated from Connecticut College with a BA in Mathematics, with minors in French and Philosophy. I received a departmental math prize each year of my college career, and served as a math tutor, as well as proofread French papers for other students. At the same time, I worked in the Career Enhancing Life Skills office, was the Master Electrician for Theater Services, and participated in club soccer, orchestra, and other campus activities. I particularly enjoyed my role as a dorm leader: I was a Governor during my sophomore and junior years, and promoted student involvement in dorm activities. I was also a Housefellow (a paraprofessional Residence Advisor) my senior year, ensuring the physical and mental health of all students in the dorm, in coordination with other departments on campus.
One of the most interesting things about math, in my opinion, is how everyone c ... read more

In teaching math and physics I find that most student's heads start to spin when looking at numbers, so I do my best to use analogies to describe a mathematical process, then once a student feels comfortable with the analogy they can apply this analogy to solve problems with numbers. Again stemming from overcoming phobias of math or physics being the most important step in learning, I try to make the complicated and confusing territory of math and physics easily navigable by bringing problems to a tangible ground for students.
I've recently tutored math and general science for UpwardBound, a program designed to inspire and give the tools necessary to under-privileged high school students to become first generation college students. Throughout my study of math and physics, I've found that most people that are unable to do these subjects are limited by their own phobias and that if t ... read more

I love the interaction between a teacher and their students. For me teaching is a form of self discovery. My students are like mirrors in which I see my strengths and weaknesses. I constantly learn from my students and I grow as they grow. I feel as individuals we are limitless and teaching reminds me of it as I see my students grow. My students in turn gain confidence about themselves through the same process of discovery. I am a great believer in that education is a tool to learn about yourself and to exercise self belief and confidence in yourself. I not only teach subjects, but also teach students to learn about themselves.
As a Computer Science graduate, I have had extensive experience in Mathematics, physics, and computers. As I have always been passionate about teaching, I always taught while attending school. Teaching and tutoring experience: - High school calculus ... read more

I recently graduated from the University of Colorado with two bachelor's degrees in elementary education and psychology. Throughout my studies at CU I taught at several different (and diverse) elementary scools in the front range area. I've taught second through fifth grades. I first started tutoring middle school students when I was in high school, and my tutoring continued throughout college. I was given an award of excellence on the Praxis II exam (required for teacher licensure). My writing skills and ability to differentiate instruction are some of my stronger skills due to extensive practice and refining throughout college.

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching has been an extremely rewarding career. My primary goal as a teacher is to help each child to experience the great feeling of success. I believe that success, big or small, promotes self confidence, which creates further successes. My teaching style is supportive and kind. I challenge my students to the extent that I believe they are capable. I am patient and believe in positive reinforcement as a teaching tool.
I have been teaching dance to children and young adults for the last 10 years. However I pride myself on teaching my students more than the physical elements of dancing. The exercises, and "games" that I teach incorporate important memory and creative thinking skills. I am an exceptional math/English tutor. I've earned a bachelor degree in Accounting from Santa Clara University. I have three years professional working experience for several multinational companies, which has helped me understand the importance of great communication and math skills in business. In Denver, I've taught math and English to high-risk youth. For the 2010-2011 school year, I had 100% of my students’ parents request me to be next year's tutor. I passed the state certified PLACE mathematics exam showing competency in math (i.e. pre-algebra, algebra I, II, calculus, trig, geometry, and other math operations and concepts). In Peru, I taught English for a year. I speak fluent Spanish and have taught many students with disabilities.

Learning starts with learing about oneself and how you best perform. It is very similar to sports, you start off learning the techniques and then you must learn how you best apply them, and yes it takes practice. I have gathered many tools in my life and they came from all the different activities I have done. One must only keep the eyes open and mind focused to absorb the world around them. I believe that if given the answer the lesson is lost. Sometimes it is frustrating, but training wheels must never be confused with pushing the bike. The 'Ah ha' moment can only be earned not given. All children are different and more they learn about what makes them different, the better prepared they are to know and deal with their strengths and weaknesses.
Although I have no formal teaching experience, we all learn and teach everyday in our lives. I am very intelligent and want to pa ... read more
