I have been signing and a part of the Deaf community for over 6 years. I am proficient in American Sign Language and use it on a daily basis in my current position. American Sign Language is a beautiful visual language that cannot be learned through a book. I studied Sign Language Studies focusing on the linguistic aspect as well as Deaf culture.

I completed my Master's Degree in Reading Education and am state certified as a Reading Specialist K-12. Because of my extensive training in this area I can extend upon classroom teaching and work collaboratively to use research based methods to improve instruction. I have studied various forms of assessment, as well as, collected data that can help improve current and future English Language Arts programs. I am currently a tutor with Saginaw Valley State University's Reading Clinic where I assess students, create individualized lesson plans and tutor students of varying abilities and ages twice a week. As a high school student I tutored as part of the National Honor Society for 2 years. I tutored elementary and middle school students in group settings after school. I helped them with all subjects. After graduating from Michigan State University I have been tutoring privately in college level mathematics. I also attended a semester of Medical School and at the end of the semester I was selected to be a teaching assistant for Anatomy. I assisted for a few weeks but then I had to leave medical school due to bereavement reasons. My experience as an assistant for those weeks was very exciting, but was similar to how I interacted with my lab partners in making sure that everyone knew the material the previous semester. Many people have different teaching skills and techniques. I do not believe any technique to educate a child is better than any other technique. Each child learns differently. Understanding the fact that children learn differently is crucial. The teacher must be able to adapt to the child's learning style. I believe I have the ability to use an array of teaching styles to help children. I would enjoy the opportunity to help children learn. As a student at the University of Detroit Mercy, I worked as a tutor for two years. I helped other students struggling in mathematics and biology classes.
