A Little Bit About Me...

I find that students (myself included) learn best when they feel safe and that they can be successful. I believe it's important to teach in the zone of proximal development and build on a student's interests. The best way to do this is begin with activities that are fun and if it's possible, to access the creative side of the brain during learning to help students to relax.
My teaching journey has taken me to many different places and I've had the opportunity to work with all ages of students from 3 year olds to college-age. Specifically I have experiences with students who are from culturally and linguistically diverse backrounds and also with students with special needs and learning disabilties. My teaching style depends on the student. Some students need me to explain the subject material to them rather than read it from the book, while other students benefit most if they work through a problem and then ask me a question when they get stuck. Though regardless of the student, I always ask questions as we go, because I know that students learn best when they engage with the material.
I graduated this spring with honors from Carleton College. For my senior thesis in Math, three of my colleagues and I designed a Challenge Math curriculum for fifth grade students. Together we compiled our lessons into a book, and once a week each we taught a small group of students. One of the most interesting things about math, in my opinion, is how everyone can have different understandings of fundamentally similar concepts. One method may work for Student A but not Student B, so I aspire to teach methods that will reach both students. I engage and interact with my students a lot in order to properly gauge how my students are progressing and what I can do to further help them. Also, I like using 'real world' examples to reinforce a concept and show its practicality in everyday life, but I do not like to introduce concepts through such examples, because often students are not able to generalize enough from the examples to truly understand the concept. I enjoy working with kids and seeing the look of success in their eyes. Filling students with the "I can do it!" attitude is what I find the most joy in teaching. I pay close attention to what works the best for each student. If the student learns the best visually, then I write a lot down. I read aloud and explain for auditory learners, and so on.
