A Little Bit About Me...

I am a retired Boulder valley teacher and I have taught from the preschool to college level for over 20 years. Most recently, I worked as an ESL and reading teacher. My training was modeled after reading recovery and involved one year of supervised teaching one-on-one with children who were struggling readers. The goal of this training is to help children work with their strengths as readers, rather than focusing on their weaknesses. Children learn the strategies that they need in order to be successful, independent readers. The work I do with them is very focused and begins with a thorough diagnostic assessment of their reading abilities. My teaching journey has taken me to many different places and I've had the opportunity to work with all ages of students from 3 year olds to college-age. Specifically I have experiences with students who are from culturally and linguistically diverse backrounds and also with students with special needs and learning disabilties. In the last few years I have tutored students one-on-one in organizational skills, studying for tests, writing and editing.
I find that students (myself included) learn best when they feel safe and that they can be successful. I believe it's important to teach in the zone of proximal development and build on a student's interests. The best way to do this is begin with activities that are fun and if it's possible, to access the creative side of the brain during learning to help students to relax.

I love teaching kids. Kids absorb new things like a sponge and often need things taught in a variety of ways in order to fully comprehend a subject. Regarding math, I use real-world examples to show how a particular concept is important. Then, I show the method to solve the problem. Next, I have the student teach me how to solve the problem. My teaching/coaching style is structured, organized, yet relaxed. I believe it's important to get to know the individual and his/her learning style before creating a personalized education plan for him/her. After discerning how a person best learns, I would tailor a program based on areas that most need improvement. Then we would design "classes" or units that are interesting and meaningful to the student.
