A Little Bit About Me...

I'm a 27 year old that accepted a part-time internship in Fort Collins, Colorado. Also, I'm in the process of applying for PHD programs (starting in 2011) in hopes of becoming a professor in the long-run. Although I don't have experience as a paid tutor, I have volunteered and helped out a plethora of people in two main areas: Dealing with disabilities in education (A.D.D, memory disorders,etc) and Statistics/Math. A Little Bit About Me...

As a teacher’s assistant for photography in high school, I realized that I had a natural aptitude for teaching and breaking subjects down into manageable parts. In college, I was the person that other students came to for guidance with difficult topics, from mathematical equations to evolutionary theory. Since I earned my BS in wildlife biology, I have taught in many capacities, including as a substitute teacher and as a trainer for new employees. I have taught discouraged children to read and fostered latent talents. As a tutor for the Interfaith Refugee Ministry, I worked with children and adults from all over the world, including a woman from Zimbabwe who was studying to earn her GED, but struggled just to create a complete sentence in English. A Little Bit About Me...

I am new to tutoring, but not to teaching. My experience in tutoring began in high school when I volunteered for my local library, in a program aimed towards improving students’ reading ability. Having had considerable difficulty learning to read myself, I felt it was important that I attempt to pass this on to others. When I entered Knox College I was focusing on English, and ended up helping my fellow students with writing and editing their papers.
I have always sought to lead rather than force something upon the student by rote. Most important is to present the information in a way that is both interesting and memorable. It is my experience that people remember things better when they truly understand the process, and have reason to listen to the explanation.
