My comments on tutoring Creative Writing: I specialize in Creative Writing tutoring and have been tutoring it for over 20 years now. I am very good at breaking down the process and making it easy to understand. First, I'll show you how to write a dynamite opening that grabs the reader's attention: "Jesus!" Fubar exclaimed as he recoiled, trembling in horror. "I didn't know the gun was loaded." Then, I'll show you how to write to avoid wordiness like Hemingway, to be more descriptive, and to keep focus and relevance! As Dr. Seuss says, "The writer who breeds / More words than he needs / Is making a chore / For the reader (who reads)…" I promise that your writing will flow naturally and that you will get top grades. Your reader won't want to put your story or poem down once he or she starts reading! I'll also show you how to get more length out of your writing the right way -- by being more descriptive. For example, many students make plain, simple, undescriptive statements like "The narrator thought about the events in his life." Pretty dry, right? Something like that may vaguely suggest to the reader that a chapter in the narrator's life is ending, or that the narrator's life is about to end. It's a bit more descriptive if we introduce some imagery: "The narrator watched the sunset as he thought about the significant events in his life." Now the sunset symbolizes that the sun is going down on his life and that he doesn't have much time left. But we can still be much more descriptive with our word choices. Adverbs describe verbs, and adjectives describe nouns, so we can skillfully choose words to convey regret and anger and get the point across for the dying narrator by describing the key nouns and verbs in the sentence: "The narrator wistfully watched the crimson sunset as he thought about the significant events in his life." The pictures we paint are worth a thousand words in Creative Writing. There are words for all writing occasions, and I will help you discover how to convey just the right tone and say just what you want. I don't just write your papers for you -- we do that together -- and you learn how to write for yourself -- a skill that serves you over and over in the years to come. Your first hour of tutoring with me is free (even if you don't continue) so you can see how much tutoring is really going to help you.

I am currently employed by a college in Roanoke, Virginia as a tutor of mathematics, chemistry, and computer science and tutor elementary school, middle school, high school, college students, and others professionally. For the last 23 years, it has been so fulfilling working for three colleges and tutoring independently over 2,000 students of all ages in all areas of math and computer science, as well as college writing, adult literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL). I have a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and computer science and am internationally certified by the College Reading and Learning Association. I love tutoring more every year I do it. If you watch me closely during our sessions, you can see me secretly paying keen attention to you and how you learn best. For example, you might say, "It LOOKS like they want me to factor here." And I'll think, "Aha! LOOKS. M ... read more

If you looked over my resume, you would see that I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, a year of experience as an adjunct instructor at a medical career college and two years teaching English as a Second Language at a private institution. However, if you looked over my life, you would see that I have been teaching, tutoring and mentoring my entire life. I have volunteered as a mentor, a tutor, and a teacher in community organizations, in local schools, and at my local church; and I home schooled my own children. During my teaching career, I have worked with people from varied backgrounds, various ages, people from all over the world, and I love it. What works for one student may not work for the other. One-on-one instruction is a great opportunity to find out which learning-teaching style works best for the individual student. I am patient, friendly and flexible. At the same ti

As a graduate of Liberty University, I understand the importance of having a strong foundation educationally. With a background in business and analyzing numbers, I understand many math concepts that will benefit your company's goal. During the last three years, I have worked as a Academic Coach and Mentor for Lynchburg City Schools; there I provided one-on-one tutoring and life mentorship to over 100 students. I was also a homebound instructor for inner city at-risk youth where I provided one-on-one instruction for the students' core classes. I worked as a substitute teacher for Lynchburg City Schools and the Regional Juvenile Detention Center. I have worked with children of all ages and I enjoy making a difference in their lives. Helping them understand that they can create their own futures by setting goals and working hard towards them. I care about the well-being of my students and

Education has always been extremely important to me. To me there is no greater feeling than finally grasping a difficult concept and I love helping someone else achieve that feeling. Consistently during grade school, high school, and college, other students came to me for help with their schoolwork and I enjoyed providing them with a new perspective, or recapping the teacher’s lecture. I have worked as a tutor for migrant aid workers’ children, helping them to learn English, as well as with Biology, Math and Grammar. I have a BA in Biology with extensive credit hours in Chemistry. I have also worked as a Chemist for two and a half years. I have always enjoyed English and Grammar and have consistently excelled in both. I have a great deal of experience training fellow employees and have devised the system of show them once, let them do it once while talking them through it, and then

The most important aspect of education that I have learned is that it is not about teachers making a difference; it is about helping students make a difference. Knowing this, I strive to help all students succeed using the most efficient learning strategies possible. Technology is a growing tool in the classroom and I intend to use it as much as possible to engage students and help them learn. Also, it is important to incorporate many learning strategies into planning in order to reach all students. Critical thinking strategies and reading strategies also need to be integrated into a lesson as well. It is important to me to provide all necessary adaptations to help all students succeed. As a recent graduate of Kansas State University, I am excited for the opportunity to teach reading and writing to all students. During my experience throughout the last four years, I have been fortunate e

I taught 7th grade Language Arts for six years when I lived in Florida. I collaborated on the team that created the Orange County curriculum for teaching writing to the middle grades. This curriculum is still in use today. I worked for the Princeton Review as a tutor doing SAT preparation both privately and in a classroom setting. This was in preparation for both the verbal and math skills sections. I believe that students of all ages respond to humor, honesty, and respect. Subjects in which that students have difficulty can be made accessible to them by demonstrating to them the humor in learning something hard and the fun of conquering the subject. Learing should be something students enjoy.

As a lifelong student and advocate of learning, I achieved a GPA of 3.75 upon returning to university classes as an older adult. I have many years of working in business, coaching and mentoring in several fields, which include accounting and business practices, such as customer service. While attending college, my happiest moments arrived with exceptional grades on research and theory papers. In the team environment, I am usually the "editor" since it comes so naturally. When teaching, I believe in the "wow factor" so the student can really see how much fun learning can be. When they are amazed with the world of knowledge, it makes their learning and my teaching so much fun! I am here to help students set and achieve their highest goals.

I graduated from Liberty University in May 2009 with a BS in Accounting. I am currently and have been a substitute teacher in Bedford County for the 2009-2010 school year. I have substituted for grades 6-12. I have been a football coach at Liberty High School for 3 years and I have been a track & field coach at Liberty High School for 5 years. I have helped different types of students away from school in various subjects. I love math and I am in the process of completing the requirements to gain a teaching license to teach high school math. I really enjoy being around kids and helping them learn new things. When you teach a kid something and they finally get it, the sight of their face lighting up is priceless. I believe that one should teach using a variety of methods because all kids do not learn the same way and each individual method shows something new each time. I believe that all

My students in college say that I have a laid-back style, with a sense of humor and a willingness to help students who need anything. I have been told I have a three dimensional style of training. I teach in a way that every style of student can (eventually) get it. I have taught both children and adults in the various positions I have held through my life (camps, schools, employers and church). Nothing is more exciting than seeing the "light bulb moment" go off on an individual's face! As the Head Trainer for Order Entry and Customer Service for ten years at J Crew I taught detailed customer service training for new hires. I also implemented and taught the Train the Trainer Program within the Lynchburg, VA Region 2000 community. I created a Remedial Training Program to raise skill levels among associates and taught Telephone Etiquette and motivational training. I also revised the Order Entry Manual to be used for all new hires.

I have been blessed with professors at the university level who understand the importance of one-on-one instruction. Through the "creativity" of thoughtful instructors I have seen myself grow and develop in ways that I hadn't thought possible. Every student learns differently, and once the instructor gets to know the student well enough and is able to tailor their lessons to the needs of the student, true learning happens. Teaching isn't just about preparing a student for a test; teaching is about creating and inspiring the desire to learn within the student so that they will be learn, not just because they are forced to, but because they are thirsty for knowledge. I have spent several years as a student and tutor at the university level. I am planning to enter medical school in the Fall of 2012 and as such have developed a strong foundation in the sciences throughout my undergraduate ed

I've always believed that children learn by doing. I would rather have my students get real hands-on experience because concepts can be better attained and understood if children get real experience with it. I also believe that children learn differently from one another and a teacher should be able to accommodate the different learning styles of her or his students. One method may not work for a student, so I feel that it is the teacher's responsibility to make sure each student reaches their full potential by finding ways that will work for her/his students and then incorporate these differences in the classroom. After watching a documentary on teachers teaching in the inner city, I decided to switch my major from Pre-Law to Elementary Education. I've always loved learning and I wanted to be able to convey that same message to my students. In college, I majored in Elementary Education

I have accumulated 25 years of teaching experience, both in the classroom setting and on an individual basis. I taught English, remedial through college prep levels, in public education for 16 years, and then I moved into private school education for 9 years. I have especially enjoyed working with foreign exchange students, specifically German, Korean, Japanese, and Hispanic. I also have experience as a peer mentor for other educators. My expertise lies in the areas of written and spoken communication, with an emhasis on essay and research paper writing. I believe an interactive approach to teaching is the most effective style of relaying information. Lecture with constant questioning and feedback has proven effective for my classroom situations in the past. I also have had great success with modeling the writing process in a step-by-step procedural format. My students and I both enjoy u

After graduating from Virginia Tech in 1973, I decided that I would enter the field of public education. After 6 years of successful and rewarding experiences in secondary education, I decided to return to college and obtain a Masters Degree in Education. Upon receiving my Masters in 1984, I taught at the post secondary level in both Virginia and North Carolina. At the post secondary level, I had the opportunity to teach a wide variety of subjects from Math to Business Administration. I thoroughly enjoy teaching students at various ages and stages of development. I consider myself to be very creative, and I try to give the students as much hands-on experience as possible. I am constantly seeking feedback from the student in terms of how well I am presenting the subject matter, so my methods of teaching will vary. I am always open to new ideas. Failure is not a word in my teaching v

I have 30 years journalism and communications experience and completed all course work for M.A. in journalism. I am the author or co-author of 14 books and hundreds of articles. I made a living as freelance writer for 15 years and had writing jobs on staff for about 15 years. I am interested in teaching writing and language arts skills to students. My style is to adapt to the skill level and interests of the student and to work toward their own goals, whether these are to write a personal essay for college, to learn to write better generally, or to develop better overall English skills so they can move on to the next grade in school.
