I try to me more personable than most instructors. Many students simply need another approach to a subject to understand the material. I actively find that perfect approach for an individual student. I have taught and tutored since I was sixteen. I currently teach for USC, a few online universities, Syl. Learning Center, and am a Professional Writing Tutor. Positive reinforcement is the key. When a student sees that an adult is taking an honest interest in them, then they are not only more willing to learn, but more able. Telling a child "I know you can do it" instead of "you can do better than that" is imperative.
