University professor with years of tutorong experience.

I try to me more personable than most instructors. Many students simply need another approach to a subject to understand the material. I actively find that perfect approach for an individual student.
I have taught and tutored since I was sixteen. I currently teach for USC, a few online universities, Syl. Learning Center, and am a Professional Writing Tutor. I teach all grades and university levels, but my specialties are AP Courses and university courses. I have taught everything from 4 yr olds phonics to College level writing and literature to basic maths and sciences to Calculus and Trig.

Positive reinforcement is the key. When a student sees that an adult is taking an honest interest in them, then they are not only more willing to learn, but more able. Telling a child "I know you can do it" instead of "you can do better than that" is imperative. Even the most tempermental or unmotivated student can be helped as long as that personal connection is there. I have always found that boosting their self-confidence, and thus reducing their stress/frustration level can work wonders. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than being able to connect with a child who has been labled "difficult" or "unwilling".

A Little Bit About Me...

The majority of my formal teaching experience has come in the past four years during my graduate career, during which I taught 3 semesters of college-level introductory and cellular biology labs. Additionally, I have worked extensively with incoming graduate students, developing and teaching workshops on presentations, oral examinations, and general studying skills. I am passionate about biology and the sciences and am a firm believer in an interdisciplinary approach to learning. Having just finished my master's thesis, I have strong outlining and writing skills that are applicable to any field of research.
I am an advocate of self-discovery and prefer to ask questions of my students rather than answer them. I believe that if a student can discover the answer for themselves, rather than being told the answer, they will have a deeper and longer-lasting understanding of the mater ... read more

My teaching style is extremely dependent on the individual student, and what their particular situation calls for. As someone who struggled at the beginning of their academic career myself, I am very sensitive to such situations. I take incredible joy in learning, and I believe that any student can achieve this given the right approach.
I have earned my BA in English Literature, which gave me amazing professional diversity, as well as exemplary writing skills. These skills were indispensable during my postgraduate work in Archaeology. During a five year career as a professional archaeologist I have authored many reports and presented academic papers at conferences. I have a keen awareness of how to introduce new students to complex information because I've had the opportunity to participate in teaching high school students and undergraduates about field archaeology and artifact ana ... read more

One of the most rewarding things about teaching is seeing the progress a student makes, whether it be quick or slow, and one of the great things about reading and writing is that it is a skill that can only be improved upon. Reading and writing is not something that is forgotten over the summer, and once something clicks with a student, that is the most satisfying aspect of being a teacher or tutor. No learning style is the same, and I believe that the best way to learn the literary arts is to practice reading and writing.
Through my experience with the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, I was expected to demonstrate a high level of expertise in my chosen field. As a writing emphasis major, I chose writing classes that focused on the principles of teaching writing and reading in a classroom setting. I also took several classes that focused on the student writer of today, and ways ... read more

I am committed to differentiated instruction based on Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences. In addition, for many of my unit and lesson plans I rely on Blooms Taxonomy, in order to reach the higher levels of learning, those beyond knowledge and comprehension. I frequenly use art and social history to keep the subjects relatable for my secondary-level students. I have taught 9th grade repeaters, 9th grade honors, and 12th grade on-level classes, as well as creative writing, thus revealing a range of ages, abilities, and subjects.
Having worked in corporate America, I am a career-changer teacher who, despite growing up with a educationally-oriented family, came to teaching a bit later in life. I am a life-long reader as well as learner. Add these factors to my formal education in secondary teaching, English language, British literature, and teaching English as a second lang ... read more

I love working with both children and adults. I think that everyone has the ability to learn ,but teaching styles need to be geared toward the individual. Some seem to learn more through doing while others from lecture. Everyone has the potential to learn just at different paces. I believe that everyone has potential and it is our job as tutors and teachers to help bring it out. There are no stupid children just lazy teachers in my opinion. Given the opportunity I believe that I can help to bring out the potential in those who are in need.

My teaching methods are rather basic. I respect the student, and I encourage the student. I have found that reward goes much farther than ridicule or punishment when motivating a student to believe in themselves, and thus excel. I also teach the importance of information. What I mean by that, is that I teach the student why the information they are learning is relevant to the real world, I don't teach to a test. By employing these methods over the past several years, I have enjoyed a great deal of success with my students, and they have excelled beyond expectations.
I graduated from the College of Charleston with a degree in Sociology. Almost immediately I went to work in the behavioral health field. While there, I found an ability to connect with, and build a rapport with the residents at the facility. After a year, I took a position as a Clinical Counselor at the Medical Universi ... read more

I love working with children. I especially love teaching them about science and mathematics because I find these subjects so interesting. There are few things more rewarding then seeing it all "click." I like to use diagrams and real life situations to explain subjects. Breaking things down into laymen's terms and reducing intimidation by putting things simply helps most students to grasp difficult topics. I'm a pretty good artist and like drawing diagrams. I also have acquired numerous study aides during my years in college. Most of all, I feel it is important to teach kids HOW to study and not just WHAT to study.
