More About This Tutor...

I am a recent Bachelor of Science in Child Studies graduate of FGCU and hold a current FCCPC. I am considered a non-traditional graduate (which in my case means older), and I bring with me a range of personal and professional experiences that have developed and enhanced my capacity for learning, teaching, and adaptability. My primary interest in learning is focused on the social-emotional and cognitive influences that create the optimal conditions for brain function during the learning process. Providing both the necessary supportive social-emotional environment through positive guidance as well as the cognitive stimulation that physical, sensory, and creative and artistic activities produce are fundamental to implementing a brain-based learning approach, and I am trained to integrate hands-on activities across the curriculum and learning domains that relate to real world experiences. ... read more

My comments on tutoring ADD/ADHD : I have a Bachelors (BA) degree in Child Education with my Masters degree (MA) in Special Needs Education. For the past three years I have worked as an SEN teacher in three local schools in Liverpool UK working with children aged 5 years to 15 years with ADD / ADHD disorders

I have traveled the world with my husband for the past 8 years before moving to the USA. I have vast experience of working with many types of children a lot of whom didn't have English as a first language. My training as a special needs teacher and my global experience has taught me to be very adaptive in my teaching style when working with SN kids. I have attended and passed many training courses both educationally, psychologically and medically. I keep myself up-to date with all the latest teaching methods.
Whether working in a classroom or one-on-one at home I treat my pupil as a friend and confidant working with him/her to gain the pupils confidence and trust as the building block for their educational needs. I am an outgoing person and try to to make learning as fun as can be but with a strict approach to achieving goals. As well as educational needs I also work with the pupil ... read more

My old next door neighbors have two children. One is a boy in elementary and one is a girl in middle school. I tutored the boy in reading and writing. He was able to read his first book on his own after a few weeks with me. I had to tutor the girl in math. she was taking algebra and was having a tough time with it. In two weeks of many meetings, she was able to pass her final exam. No matter what grade I was in, I always enjoyed going down to the ESE room and helping the special kids. I did what ever I could to help.

I like to make teaching fun! If a student is bored they aren't going to be putting 100% into their work. I also use a positive reward system and celebrate all achievement. Even if it is minor.
I have been working with kids of all ages for a long time. I love to see them learn and grow. That moment when they "get" something is magical! I spent the 2011-2012 school year teaching at a title 1 school in Collier County and have grown exponentially from it! I had several students in my class who needed special help, and half of my class were English language learners. These students have helped me to strengthen my skills and adapt to different student's styles.

I Love working with young children and helping them learn new things. I have a lot of patience and enjoy working with students who have difficulty learning new things. I believe that many students learn better on a one on one basis and I think that it is important to work with students one on one.
I am a Senior in the College of Education at FGCU. In the Spring of 2009 I was a reading tutor in Kindergarten for two students in an ESOL class. During this time I was assigned to help these students learn their sight words and practice their reading skills. Currently, I am in my non-final internship in a Kindergarten class. In this class I teach students reading skills and math skills that are neccessary for Kindergarten students.

As a Nurse Manager of an ICU, I was tapped to teach IV Therapy and heart rhythm monitoring classes. That developed into a FT position as a Nursing Inservice Coordinator, then later as a Director of a hospital wide education department, either teaching classes myself(such as in CPR)or coordinating others to teach. My years as a consultant I either taught seminars having to do with quaility improvement or worked with smaller groups and on-in-one in business/hospital facilities. As a Personal Coordinator, most recently, I taught new employees timekeeping, payroll procedures and specific computer access steps.I think my stronger suit might be in reading and science, but I think that I could manage elementary level math.
I like more interactive methods, as that is the basically what I did the majority of the time. I don't enjoy seminars with large groups as much. I try to be very patient a ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My level of experience in the education world has gone onto the Masters Level and I am currently pursuing my double master’s degree in Psychology. While in college, I served as a tutor in the Psychology Department for freshman who needed additional help in their studies. During my master’s study, I worked for an agency that placed Foster Children in Foster Homes. It was my job to ensure that I effectively and accurately taught parenting classes to the potential foster parents. My strong areas are in English, Science, and Psychology as well as Reading. I have also worked in an academic environment for the last year, and had the opportunity to tutor college freshman at Southwest Florida College during my time with the college.
Teaching has become something that I discovered a great passion for while I was educating parents in a Parenting Class for Foster Parents. Each student is dif ... read more

Both my undergraduate and graduate degrees required a high level of excellence in writing papers.  I have learned extensive grammatical skills due to writing research papers and essays on various topics.  In addition, I have tutored several youth and children in math, history, and English. Many of these youth came from Korea and had to overcome language barriers in their studies.  This made my job as a tutor more difficult, but more rewarding as I was able to see them progress in the English language and their studies.  I work with youth on a weekly basis and strive to teach in creative and interesting ways.
I love teaching and working with youth and children.  I am patient with students and teach in a way that empowers the student to find the answers for himself/herself.  I love when my students have "aha" moments and really begin to understand the topic of study.  I believe educa ... read more

I have worked with children since high school as a baby-sitter. Now I am involved in the education field and could not be happier. I have worked hard in my own education to learn how to be the most effective teacher I can be for your children. I have learned numerous techniques on how to teach all sorts of concepts. As a teacher, I believe if the lesson is intriguing to the student, then they will learn. My goal is to find out what works best for your child as a student and then make sure that their academic needs are met. Our tutoring sessions would be full of knowledge, but also enjoyable. An engaged student, is a student who learns. I hope to teach all my students to the best of my ability.

I strongly believe in combining methods of instruction to most effectively fit the individual's needs thereby making the learning process successful as well as meaningful and memorable. A Little Bit About Me...

After graduation I taught English for 28 years. During this time I became a Dept. Head. I also was trained to train teachers in learning styles and hemisphericity. I have adult AD/HD. I began working on teaching methods for AD/HD students. I have also trained over 200 teachers. I have tutored students for the GED, ACT, SAT, LSAT, and MCAT.
I believe strongly in approaching each child with a variety of techniques. I let the child explore why, then give concept information. The student then needs to practice, and finally personalize the information. This must be done using both analysis (left brain) and synthesis(right brain).

I am very organized, being on task and requiring my students to be so. I enjoy helping students learn and expect students to use their time wisely and productively. When a student does not get a concept, I break it down in very small steps; thus, helping the child pinpoint where they are making errors and correcting them. I encourage students by giving both verbal and non verbal rewards, such as stickers, and small prizes. Students seem to respond to my teaching style, and I have had success in improving student scores on standardized testing.
I have taught Kindergarten through 8th grade, in elementary ed, language arts, writing process, and social studies. I have tutored students in math and English, as well as worked in after school programs that focused on tutoring. I am currently a local Florida Gulf Coast University Bachelor of Arts graduate of Special Education with certification to also teach general education students Kindergarten through Sixth grade. I chose to teach in the difficult area of Exceptional Education, because I desired to teach only using the best research and evidence based strategies so that every student I had the opportunity to teach will learn. Through my years of volunteering and in my final year of teaching internships at the Elementary school level, I am very excited to cater my services toward elementary aged children who need help in Math, Reading, Social Studies or Writing areas.

While working in the food-service industry for the past twenty-plus years, I have held supervisory positions and provided training to literally hundreds of employees. This natural ability to work with others became apparent when I began tutoring. I have strong organizational skills and have been trained in many aspects of tutoring through my involvement in the Supplemental Instruction Program at Florida Gulf Coast University.
