My comments on tutoring Genetics : I took this course during my undergraduate studies at UCSD, receiving an A in the course.

I worked as an Undergraduate Instructional Apprentice (UGIA)/Tutor at UCSD for the courses of Nutrition and AIDS, Science, and Society. In my role as a UGIA/Tutor, I was responsible for leading a weekly (sometimes biweekly) discussion section with a group of students in which I reviewed course material that was taught by the professor in their respective courses as well as providing worksheets and writing quizzes to help the students learn the material covered in lecture. In addition to these discussion sections, I also held weekly office hours to assist students in regards to answering any questions they may have had about course material as well as run review sessions along with other UGIAs/Tutors to help prepare students prior to their exams.
First, I begin by answering any questions a student has about the material they are learning. Once all questions are answered, I usually l ... read more

If you don't like the results, I haven't done my job.

I won the state championship in the 100 meters and went to Adams State College in Alamosa CO. Broke a leg in track and received withdrawn F across the board. Left college and healed up. Went to the Army two years and reserve three years. Came back and picked up the quickest degree possiable. Moved to Hawwaii, three years. Became a ciritified dept of defense government contractor. Furnish and deliver contracts. Ended up moving back home to Albuquerque NM. I started working in the Indian Casinos for 13 years. I bought a house and retired. But now I'm tired of sitting around.
All I do is tend to my students needs. I'm personal. Like to get off track with my students and lead them back to the point.

Teaching is a great way to educate and to learn. As a tutor, first, I see the student’s understanding level. I plan ahead of time and prepare proper material. However, if the material is provided, I find effective methods of teaching, and teach each student accordingly. It’s obvious that some techniques work better for some students but not others. Therefor, I choose a good teaching method, and assist students to learn the material better, faster and easier.
As a recent graduate of San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and minor in Psychology, I have taken many classes in biology, physics, algebra, psychology, chemistry as well as organic chemistry. I learned how to plan, provide and educated students by teaching and tutoring sciences and English classes for four years. Throughout my working experiences, I learned how to manage and organize an efficient ... read more

I prepare for tutoring sessions by asking any prospective students to please send me their study material prior to our sessions (at least a day please!). This helps me evaluate what may be needed to master the material for their class and is just one of the ways that I cater to my students needs and prepare them for success. I am a firm believer in asking questions. Not only do I ask questions, but I also constantly encourage students to ask me questions as well. This helps me better gauge where they are struggling and where I need to assist most in fortifying their understanding.

I created and gave lectures on various chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry topics as well as conducted lab sections for students. I wrote tests, quizzes, homework assignments, and some study guides as well. I addressed students needs and concerns via email or one on one time after class. I have a BS in Chemistry from Pacific Union College and an MS in Biochemistry from Loma Linda University. A Little Bit About Me...

During high school I acquired my first teaching position. I figure skated as a hobby and had been working at my local ice rink for three years. A position opened up for an assistant coach. I helped teach skating classes for toddlers up to the elderly. It was a very rewarding experience. I taught classes for that ice rink for two years until I left for college. In college I helped tutor my lab partners and classmates. Still I did not expect that I would enjoy teaching as much as I do. When I came to San Diego as a graduate student, I wanted to take a position as a Teaching Assistant for financial reasons, but when I started the position, I found it to be the most rewarding job I have ever had. I have been a teaching assistant ever since, teaching all three quarters of my graduate career.
I strive to have open lines of communication between my students and myself. I think i ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I prefer to approach every student very slowly in the beginning to understand exactly where their trouble are. Listening is the most important attribute that a tutor can have followed by patience. It's my job to identify where the student's problem are and address those problems. My experience has tought me that most people just need a new perspective to understand certain materials at hand. Providing applications for someone learning new concepts is key for their development because the student understands how the concepts they're learning applies in the real world. I have been told by many of my former students that this is the reason they learn the concepts so well.

I have tutored HS 9-12 and undrgraduate students individually in Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and for SAT/ACT testing since the late 1990's. I received teaching credentials for teaching 9-12 Mathematics in California in 2005. I have worked as a Math/Sciences substitute in the Grossmont Union High School District since that time. I have also worked with A+ Professional Tutoring -- in San Diego County -- and Tutor.com -- online -- for many years, in every level of the Sciences and Mathematics.
I love Mathematics and I often wear my heart on sleeve; when it comes to Math, I try to infect the student with that bug. I believe that most students have issues with their immediate teaching and, as a result, feel that math has no meaning to them, hence I teach Mathematics in a contextual manner, showing deep meaning for the drills imposed in the classroom curriculums most experie ... read more

I have a BS in Supply Chain Management from Arizona State University, and have been pursuing a Biochemistry degree from the University of San Diego with an expected completion date of May 2012. During my studies I have become very knowledgeable in the sciences, particularly Biology, Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry. I recently took the Dental Admissions Test (DAT) and scored in the 93rd percentile. The DAT measures ability in Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Reading Comprehension, Algebra, and Geometry among other subjects. I have worked with students in a small class setting, and one-on-one for about a year, and feel very comfortable in my ability to help students achieve their educational goals.

My approach to tutoring is that all students want to learn, even if they act otherwise. It is my job to make the subject more relevant, interesting and understandable for them. I assume everyone is capable of learning the material and try different ways of introducing and reinforcing information until it sinks in. I believe parents have a hard enough job, and it is sometimes best for someone else to tackle school subjects where the kids are not thriving. Kids often benefit from a fresh perspective and if their self-esteem is at all suffering from difficulties at school, having a new person involved in their lives can help them feel more confident again.
As a student, I loved school so much so that I went on to get a graduate degree in science. Science and writing have been huge parts of my professional career (non-tutoring) and I have worked with government research entities, ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I really enjoy working with students and I feel that education is the most important aspect of an individuals life. I have taught at John W. North High School in Riverside, Ca. One of my assignments was to fill in for an AP Statistics teacher while she was on maternity leave. Since that day I have feel in love with biostatistics and took all of my graduate level electives in Biostatistics courses.
I enjoy both the one on one mentoring and also engaging students in small groups and as an entire classroom. The one on one mentoring gives me a feel for the best way for that particular student to learn, therefore I can adjust my teaching style to their strengths.

I love interaction and try to encourage as much participation as possible by asking questions. I feel that people learn best when they have an active role in the process. I also try to explain things with analogies as often as possible and have found that what might seem like a very simple analogy can often be the best way to "unlock" a person's ability to understand a concept. I have also learned that teaching is all about communication, and believe it is more that helpful to try and adopt one's communication style to meet different ways different people have of understanding.
I love teaching and explaining new ideas. Even as a Biology student at Point Loma Nazarene University, I was working with other students to study in groups and always learned best by teaching the things I understood. I am a synthetic Organic Chemist with over 7 years of industrial experience with Pfizer Inc. During this time period I routinely shared research progress with my peers and helped educate them on new reactions, instrumentation, techniques and methodology. During my studies at Kalamazoo College, I successfully completed some coursework in Education and have always wanted to pursue a career in Teaching/Tutoring. My Liberal Arts background encouraged a well-rounded education that included English, Spanish, History, Science, Mathematics, and the Arts.

I believe tutoring is not only to raise children's grades, but also to make sure they understand the material so it can be applied to other principles in their future education. I believe not every student can be tutored the same way, and I have confidence that I can mold material in a way that each student can understand.
As a high school student, I taught music and math to middle school kids for approximately two years. The music they learned was performed in a competitive circuit in which they placed. As an undergraduate, I served as a study proctor in my sorority from 2007-2009 tutoring in the subjects of math, science, and writing.

I very much enjoy teaching. All children can learn provided they are given the proper guidence. Patience, tolerance, and acceptance on the teachers/tutors part is the key to success. The student must simply be willing to learn, excel, and succeed. All children can meet their potential given a good learning environment, encouragement, and established trust that the teacher/tutor is willing to give freely. When I strive (and I will) the student strives. With this: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
