I believe the best way for someone to learn something is through application and repetition. As both a tutor and youth lacrosse coach I have had success by teaching my students how to approach problems rather than simply giving them answers. I am extremely patient and am very willing to take alternative approaches in helping a student learn.
During my undergraduate career at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, I obtained a wealth of knowledge in the fields of math and science. My experience with tutoring, employee training and working with my own two children has shown me that there are many different learning styles and paces. To avoid mind-numbing repetition, I present the material with a combination of text and pictures, then review the material with ungraded short answer exercises ("active learning – I do and I understand"). Then we summarize. I also connect what the student is learning with previous course content to promote learning by association. After graduation, I worked as a lab technician in a clinical immunology lab for 2 years prior to attending WPI for graduate school. I have always been extremely focused on education, both my own and that of others. Starting in elementary school, I was assigned as a peer tutor to other students who had difficulty grasping the material. I continued to tutor my classmates until graduation. While in high school, I also began tutoring students that were still in elementary and middle school. Although I considered education as a career, I instead opted to major in psychology, in which I earned a BA in 2007. I also hold an AA in Liberal Studies.
