Energetic, passionate tutor ready to teach spanish to anyone

In high school I excelled in spanish to such an extent that I placed out of most of the university spanish classes. Thus, while I have moved on to learning arabic my spanish skills are honed to the extent that I plan to graduate with a spanish major (in addition to my anthropology major) by the time I finish my undergraduate work at Northwestern.
How I teach depend on what the student needs most; I would never coerce anyone into a predefined tutoring rubric, as that may harm their ability to learn.

Spanish tutoring for ALL levels!!!!

Spanish is what I love. It is my major, and I have been studying it for 6 years now. I will soon graduate with a BA in Spanish language and culture then go on to graduate school for a PhD in linguistics. This coming academic year I will be living and studying in Sevilla, Spain. I am familiar with various dialects of Spanish, specifically their differences and the reasons behind them, and the implications of these differences. Not only do I love the language, but I love to inspire the interest of others. I strongly believe anyone can learn a foreign language, it just takes the proper method of teaching, and inspired interest. I have been tutoring children in various topics for 3 years now; I have experience working with young elementary aged children, high school, and college students. I have tutored native English speakers in the Spanish language as well as aided children growing up ... read more

I received my Bachelor's Degree in music from the University of Connecticut. While partaking in this course, I took a variety of courses relating to music including music theory, music history, and applied studies (lessons) on my instrument, which was trombone. After graduating from college, I served in Americorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) for two years. Americorps NCCC is a community service organization for young adults between the ages of 18 and 24. The projects that Corps members do fall into the categories of environmental stewardship, education, disaster relief, and infrastructure improvement. I served as a Corps member in the southwestern region of the United States. After completing my terms in Americorps, I traveled to Peru to obtain my Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate. In Peru, I participated in a 4-week-long intensive course that involve ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that everyone can learn a second language, but it takes a lot of practice and dedication. I used to teach the martial arts when I was in high school and have adapted many of the tools I acquired there into my academic theories of teaching, such as; a high degree of patience, the "praise-correct-praise" method, and to lead by example. Everyone learns in a different way; having said that, I believe it is essential to keep your teaching methods well-varied. Repetition can lead to boredom and a lack of interest. It is important when working with students to not only work out of school workbooks, but to also practice on conversational abilities through listening to songs and verbal exercises.

As an undergraduate, my focus for studies in English were both Critical Literary Analysis and Creative Writing. Analytical writing was stressed heavily, giving me the ability to interpret a text based on intrinsic value. The creative tract allowed me to experiment with my own abilities while keeping in mind strategies implemented by others I have read and studied. A requirement for all English majors at the university was to have intermediate skills in a foreign language. I have taken four semesters of Spanish at the college level with additional language labs. Spanish was also my foreign language of choice throughout secondary school and I have had first hand practice from my work in Guatemala.

A Little Bit About Me...

My personal teaching philosophy entails four major themes regarding a framework for my understanding of essential requisites for successful learning. They include a) the primary importance of education to reach full human potential, b) the role of teacher as an educational channel and not the sole imparter of knowledge, c) the need for students to be challenged and the responsibility of the teacher to properly motivate them, and lastly, d) the acknowledgment that student approaches to learning are diverse in scope and therefore students require a flexible and dynamic approach on the part of the teacher.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am very comfortable working with students of all ages. I am extremely patient and easy-going with a good sense of humor. I believe in enabling students to become proficient life-long learners. I try to encourage my students to look beyond the textbook in order to achieve greater enrichment in their lives. Learning should not stop at the school doors. In order to be successful in life, students need to learn how to find and utilize resources to help them grow and mature intellectually throughout their lives. It is my ultimate goal to enable students to think critically and become successful life-long learners.
Over the past several years I have helped students achieve their potential in a wide variety of educational settings. I have taught several different subjects including social studies, math, reading, and French to students ranging from kindergarten to seniors in high school. ... read more

My teaching style is as varied as the students I have taught. I feel it is important to relate to the student in order to help them learn best. When there are different learning styles, I do my best to use a variety of teaching techniques in order to cater to the need of the student. I feel that follow up is important, as well as repetition and hands-on practice. I am not a lecturer. I find my best students learn one on one or in a small group where they can be comfortable and ask questions. With children, I have a similar approach as learning, for a child, can be very intimidating, and they have already had enough trouble in school, so patience and kindness is a best practice.

A Little Bit About Me...

I recently graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with two bachelor's degrees. One degree is in Spanish and I consider myself completely fluent, especially having spent a semester in Costa Rica. During this time I volunteered at a school teaching students ages 5 through 18 English at different levels. My other degree is in Social Thought and Political Economy which required a lot of writing, generally 15 to 25 page papers per class. It is a major dedicated to social change and I learned subjects in all areas including History, Current Affairs, Politics and Political Science.
I have been a gymnastics instructor for about eight years which has helped in shaping my teaching style. I love to push children in a supportive manner so that they can believe in themselves and truly get the most of their education. More About This Tutor...

This past September I became a tutor in the Special Needs Department at Masconomet Regional Junior High School. I chose this department and school because I was once a student in the program. Currently, I work with 12 specific students that all have severe add and adhd. Each day we create activities that focus on their weaknesses in math and English. In addition to these two subject areas, I also attend their normally scheduled classes (Science and World Cultures). This way whenever they struggle, they know they can always count on me to assist them with their weakness.
I would define my teaching style as hands on. If I can find a real life example of the material at hand, I will use it. I love to work on whiteboards/ chalkboards with students. This way they are out of their seat and showing me what they know. I am very willing to bend to any style of learning. Playing ga ... read more
