A Little Bit About Me...

I participated in ROTC and majored in Math and Physics at the University of Colorado. After college, I joined the Air Force and worked in the airfield operations career field. After two years, I was chosen to become an instructor, where I fell in love with teaching. After separating from the military, I substitute taught for a year, primarily focusing on high school math. In 2007, I moved to Las Vegas, and I worked for a Tutoring Club. I taught math and my students ranged in age from 8 years through adult.
I love teaching and working with students of all ages. I particularly enjoy watching a student's eyes light up after catching on to something new. I have tutored Algebra through Calculus I and Elementary Statistics for the last three years. 1.5 years at both Wichita State University and Washburn University. I'm currently working on a second Bachelors degree in mathematics, but this time with an emphasis in Actuarial Science. This mixes calculus, algebra, and statistics, along with some business classes, into one, keeping them fresh in my mind.
I like starting with the given information and stepping through the processes to solve a problem. Reminding them of, or even showing them, the rules, properties, and examples in the book. I normally try to find the method that best works with each pupil, then highlight on that. I also make sure not to do the work for the student. I will sometimes come up with a similar problem to work through so they can see what's really going on within the problem.

I tutored a fellow student in Finite Mathematics during college for one semester. I earned a Bachelor's of Science in Psychology, working hard to finish my degree in three years. I recently took online classes in order to achieve my Masters of Science in Education. I have worked as a general paraprofessional in elementary schools for two years and a one-on-one paraprofessional for the last year. I can usually find a way to relate the material that the student is struggling with to something else that they understand. When they can make connections to more familiar things, then they can think themselves through problems more effectively. I usually achieve this by showing them how to do a problem, doing a problem or two with them, and then having them do problems on their own, only assisting when they need it.
I have always picked things up quickly, more quickly than my peers. My peers have often come to me to ask for my help in those areas. I also see how to apply what I have learned to original problems because I see connections and hold a deeper understanding of the material.
