I traveled for a year with a family and home-schooled their 3 children. The children were in 1st grade, kindergarten, and pre-school and were seriously below grade level in math and reading. In that year, I brought those children beyond grade level in reading skills and comprehension as well as math skills. I have also been a teacher's assistant in 3rd and 4th grade classrooms and have gone through student teaching in the 3rd and 6th grade in order to complete my degree. I have had most of my experience with the elementary age-group but I also feel confident working through some middle school and high school material.

A Little Bit About Me...

While working on bachelors degrees in Music Education and French, I taught music sectionals, private lessons, and classes on primarily on trombone, euphonium, and tuba, among other instruments, co-taught a French class for young elementary students, and worked at a variety of summer camps, including a music camp in which I taught basic music theory to high school students. Prior to that, as a high school student myself, I occasionally tutored Math and English and taught lessons. I am currently working on a Masters in Music Performance on trombone, and I continue to teach both private lessons on trombone and euphonium as well as helping out with the French Table at Western Michigan University.

I'm very skills-based in my approach to teaching and employ many learning "tricks" involving mnemonics, flash-cards, student-generated learning materials, as well as being able to help the student learn to integrate what she learns into a cohesive and understandable framework for retention. I home-schooled my own son using a Montessori approach, with which I am very conversant, and he was auditing college level courses at the age of fourteen--which is proof of my ability.
