For the subjects I tutor, my style is 'pushing a pencil'. Only a genius can handle these subjects without doing problems. Everyone else, if they want to learn the subject must do problems. Usually the problems worked are the ones with answers in the back of the book. I'm careful not to do problems that are assigned as homework. Besides, I have all my books at home, and I know students will not have the same problems assigned as the ones I choose to do out of my 20 year old books.
While getting an Associates degree in Math, I tutored college math, algebra, physics, chemistry, & calculus. The subject I like to tutor the most is differential calculus. One young lady I tutored named Glenda Lenahan, having made an F on her first calculus test, requested that I tutor her. When she took the second test she mad a 98. I jokingly asked her what she missed! ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching and seeing the student's eyes light up when they understand something that had been eluding them. I am patient and considerate. My teaching style tends to be by example, or by visual. As my main field is chemistry, I have used drawings and molecule kits as visual examples whenever required. I like to have my students find science and math to be fun and interesting.
I have earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry, and throughout my school days I excelled in math and science and was often asked for help in understanding the class material by my fellow students. I was a teaching assistant for two years, and instructed chemistry laboratories. I also ran office hours to instruct students in the math and problems in the lecture course they were having problems with. I have mostly tutored in math and science.

There is no better moment that when a child becomes engaged and starts understanding and asking questions. Once a child starts asking questions you know that they are excited about it and want to learn. When teaching my goal is always to get children excited about what they are doing and then proceed from there. All children have different strengths and I try to work from those strengths.
I recently graduated with my Bachelors of Science in Biomedical Engineering. I have taken extensive courses in math and science. Math and science are fields that I love and excel at. While in undergrad I was active in many student organizations and volunteer opportunities. I volunteered at science olympiad for a year and also tutored middle school students. I have many younger siblings, all of whom I have helped with homework on several occasions.

I have formally tutored with Madison College on two occasions lasting a year. I was also Tutoring throughout my time at Edgewood on a drop in basis with any students that came to the math department and could not reach a professor. I have a BS in Mathematics and doing math at all levels is fun for me.
I enjoy helping students work through tough problems by allowing them to make mistakes and then rework the problem a couple of times the correct way. Since this is my area of expertise, I am able to come up with examples on the fly that will target the areas most troublesome to the student. Mathematics is a field that requires repetition but making that repetition as interesting as possible is a fun challenge. I do not wish to be a teacher by profession but I do enjoy helping individuals or small groups with science and mathematics.

A Little Bit About Me...

I feel it is important for students to learn not only what the answer is to a given question, but also understand the concepts and reasoning behind the answer. With this in mind, my teaching style usually walks a student through a concept thoroughly, utilizing problems to guide understanding. I find it beneficial to first gain an perceptive of where the student is at, walk them through the concept, and discuss problems step-by-step until a solution is reached. Once the concept is grasped, I often have students walk through additional problems so the student is assured that they understand the topic. Although this is the style that I have found to be most successful, I am flexible to a student’s needs and their learning style.

A Little Bit About Me...

Over the last five years, while being a graduate student and Teaching Assistant, I have gained many valuable insights about teaching. I have taught both calculus-based and algebra-based courses for a wide scope of students. I have even lectured a course for half a semester during summer sessions. I have earned a MS and BS in Physics, which has given me the understanding of many topics of math and physics. I have spent hundreds of hours in a free-for-all tutoring area, called the "Help Center" at my previous University, helping students with problem solving and understanding course material.
I believe that any student is capable of learning and solving physics problems by their self. Whenever students ask me how to solve a problem I never give them a direct answer. I ask leading questions in order to steer them on the track to figuring out by themselves each step towards solving the ... read more

More About This Tutor...

As a SPS member while attending UW-Whitewater I gave tutoring lessons to physics students who needed help i not only physics but also mathematics. I am able to communicate ideas well to others and help the understanding through an easy process.
I understand every person learns in different manners. Therefor, I have learned how to teach some students by use of examples and others by basic understanding and concepts of the idea. I encourage the thought process of the individual student so that they can learn their own ideas and therefor learn how to use these ideas on exams and future applications.
