After receiving my BA in Math Education, I spent four years in aerospace engineering before beginning my career in teaching. I taught high school math for 3 years in a private school in the US then 2 years in a public school in an urban setting in Africa, where I adapted to teaching in another culture and language. After returning to the US, I taught evening college math courses as an adjunct for 9 years as well as tutoring in the drop-in center and by private arrangement. Every one can learn. Sometimes an individual learns in their own unique style and finding that style is the key to teaching them. The best way to teach someone is to guide them when they come to a road block, rather than to give them the answer. The amount of pride and prestige that comes from having figured out a problem on their own is the most important thing. I think that teachers need to be flexible, and be willing to adapt their teaching style to suit the needs of their students. This is especially true for tutors who are often involved in a one-on-one relationship with those they tutor. I'm patient and respectful of the difficulties students have with expressing their thoughts in words. It's not unusual that they get frustrated trying to fit them into what can seem like a formal and obstuctive grammatical framework. Math is also a subject with which people often have difficulty. Being empathetic to their struggles helps to overcome them. My experience has been that most who struggle with it do pretty well with math if they make the effort. I have a knack for creating analogies and mechanisms to help students remember things for exams, as well as strategies and ways of thinking that may be a little different than what was taught in class (but still gets them to the final result). I have found, through teaching a wide variety of people a wide variety of subjects, that there is no one way to reach someone. Everyone has individual strengths and weaknesses. What I have found, however, is requisite to meet the needs of all students is respect for the learner.
