I am patient, go at the students level, and believe in the use various types of visual aids and hands on to keep my students engaged. Students learn and retain information quicker with continual repetition; however each student will grasp the information different from another and some will take more repetition than others.
I have been working with special needs students with various disabilities for 10 years. I have worked with students ranging from ADHD/ADD to those who are bed ridded and need toileting assistance. I have also had to accommodate with feeding and those who are transitioning out of high school. I can teach students how to read and write and how to ride the city but to where they need to go and make it back home. I have also taught cooking and hygiene skills.

I currently work as a substitute teacher at Riverside Military Academy. I've worked with elementary children and teenagers extensively. My most recent position serves twenty and thirty somethings in their personal and spiritual formation. I have published my writing, acted on stage, spoken before thousands and mentored dozens. The method of teaching I prefer is maieutic, i.e., one which draws knowledge from the student, rather than attempts to place it in him/her from without. To me, the process of asking questions and allowing the student's curiosity and intelligence to reach conclusions is far more effective than one-sided lecturing. My teaching style encourages relating reading and writing to what they are already reading, writing and listening to. If students can understand language and grammar in their own context and how it is useful then it will be better and easier to incorporate into their own writing and reading and therefore more natural. For example, while teaching ballads I introduced a Coldplay and Bob Dylan songs to students to better understand Lord Randall and other ballads of the time.
