I have been working as a para-educator for the past 8 years. I greatly enjoy my work. I have worked with students with disabilities that range form mild learning disabilities to sever, such as autism. I love watching their faces light up when they grasp the concept of what they are trying to learn. I have taken classes at Community College of Vermont towards earning my associates degree in elementary education. I have also taken classroom behaior and management classes and earned certificates for those. My GPA at Community College of VT has never been below 3.8.
I prefer to use fundations with the younger students. Learning each letter and its sound is a critical base. I also like the tapping method used with fundations. I am a Teach for America teacher. This means that in 2009, I applied with 40,000 applicants and was among the 4000 selected to become a teacher in a Title One school. As a TFA teacher, I have undergone intensive training that focuses on backwards planning and results based accountability. In the past year I have taught fourth and fifth grade subjects including: writing, science, social studies, fine arts, and technology. Prior to becoming a teacher, I worked with teens in crisis. Every one can learn. Sometimes an individual learns in their own unique style and finding that style is the key to teaching them. The best way to teach someone is to guide them when they come to a road block, rather than to give them the answer. My certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) gave me a familiarity with mathematics and statistics, as well as conventions of scientific research and reporting. In my experience, the most important thing to remember is that all students learn differently, and sometimes what seems like an impossible task just needs to be presented differently for better understanding. Relating the material to situations and applications that are relevant and familiar to that particular student is a much more productive and beneficial way to have students retain information.
