I have been working as a para-educator for the past 8 years. I greatly enjoy my work. I have worked with students with disabilities that range form mild learning disabilities to sever, such as autism. I love watching their faces light up when they grasp the concept of what they are trying to learn. I have taken classes at Community College of Vermont towards earning my associates degree in elementary education. I have also taken classroom behaior and management classes and earned certificates for those. My GPA at Community College of VT has never been below 3.8.
I prefer to use fundations with the younger students. Learning each letter and its sound is a critical base. I also like the tapping method used with fundations. In the process of earning my BA in History (minor in Archaeology), I became familiar with a broad range of historical subjects. My certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) gave me a familiarity with mathematics and statistics, as well as conventions of scientific research and reporting. My MA required a publication-ready thesis, which would not have been possible without organization and self-motivation.

A Little Bit About Me...

Every one can learn. Sometimes an individual learns in their own unique style and finding that style is the key to teaching them. The best way to teach someone is to guide them when they come to a road block, rather than to give them the answer. The amount of pride and prestige that comes from having figured out a problem on their own is the most important thing.
I've always loved to read, I inhereited it from my father who got it from his father. I'm an avid writer as well. I think Math is the most beautiful subject and the highest form of human expression. A lot of times people are turned away from it due to a high school math experience that they perceive as dry and boring. When I tell people I love math, I too often hear "well, better you than me!" I think part of the high school math experience should include turning students on to mathematical discovery. Confronting confusion and working through to develop an understanding that feels personal and thorough. I believe that everyone must learn in an individual way at their own pace and I am prepared to put in the necessary effort to give my students that opportunity.
