I served in the Straight Up AmeriCorps as a member for two years, specializing in tutoring and mentoring in a high school setting. I was responsible for teaching and leading programs for students as well as organizing events. Once completed, I was hired by a local non-profit to administer services and manage a Family Literacy program for 20 families. My duties included direct mentoring and tutoring, as well as identifying and implementing learning programs based on each individuals needs. I prefer to use fundations with the younger students. Learning each letter and its sound is a critical base. I also like the tapping method used with fundations. After learning each letter and its sound children can tap out each sound to figure out a word. There are trick words like: the, was, of...etc that we use flash cards for. This method worked well with my own son. He was being taught to read using pictures. Over christmas vacation during his kindergarten year we worked using fundations and he gaind four reading levels in a week and a half.

Every one can learn. Sometimes an individual learns in their own unique style and finding that style is the key to teaching them. The best way to teach someone is to guide them when they come to a road block, rather than to give them the answer. The amount of pride and prestige that comes from having figured out a problem on their own is the most important thing.

A Little Bit About Me...

Throughout high school and college, I have tutored peers and younger students in both math and physics several times, occasionally for pay. Last year I was a course assistant for a college freshman-year math course in theoretical math at Harvard University. I am enrolling in a PhD program in pure math at the University of Texas, Austin, where I will have a 16-hour-per week teaching load including three sections of undergraduate calculus.
