A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate in Elementary Education, I have taught for 30 years in all subject areas, but have concentrated the last 15 years in the area of Math. I have also tutored students. I have been involved in all levels of education ranging from 4th grade to 8th grade. I have also taught Algebra to students as part of the Mathematics programs, in which I have taught.
My teaching style is definitely one of facilitator. I present the material in a fashion, which allow students to experiment and develop their critical thinking and problem solving skills. From these skills the students will learn how to approach and solve the problems they are given. Students need to experience success and will do so. Failure is not an option. I will do what is necessary to make sure the skills are learned.

I always try to involve students in the lesson a great deal and to make sure that they are answering many questions throughout the lesson. This helps the student to be able to focus and learn and it helps me to know whether they understand. I like to use a variety of examples and demonstrations of the concepts and for students to try a few problems on their own. Young people learn through different ways and means. I try to discern the best method to instruct any particular student with whom I am tutoring at the time. I like to give examples of problems, and "problem solve" with the student through illustrative examples on paper or on the board. I encourage questions and feedback to ensure that the young person is indeed learning "how" to solve a problem, not simply to "get" a solution. A student's practical demonstration of problem solving is the best gauge to determine if that student is indeed learning or not. This decision was due to the Police Department recruiting me to teach various computer classes to police officers.
