My comments on tutoring Algebra : I am currently teaching three Algebra I courses and have tutored several students over the past few years in this content area. I can break this topic down into its most basic form!

My approach to tutoring is built around my belief that all students can learn. Once a proper foundation is in place, my strategy involves helping students master mathematical concepts one step at a time. What is sometimes taught in the classroom as a "single step" may in reality be several steps all rolled into one. My approach involves taking these "single steps" and breaking them down so each student can fully understand what is required and why. My teaching style is that all students learn differently, so why to teach them using the same methods? I learned through college that I am a very visual learner, but if the class isn’t taught that way, it’s my job to present that information in a way that helps me learn. Also, the teacher should play a dichotomous role to the student; on one hand, he or she must be patient and lenient and willing to teach the student to the best of their abilities, but also, the teacher cannot be so lenient that the student doesn’t get work done. I am a proponent of the authoritative relationship between students and learners. A teacher has to be helpful and calm, but not so easygoing that work isn’t getting done.

In most cases, the student just needs a clearer explanation than his/her book or instructor is providing. Also, I like to create visual examples that make an abstract concept into something more practical.
