A Little Bit About Me...

I will receive my bachelors degree in mathematics from Purdue University in May 2012; however I began my college career in math education so I have taken many methods/teaching courses. In the past I have done short-term tutoring for algebra/pre-algebra, geometry, high school calculus (calc 1), and algebra II. I have also tutored in English as a second language, specifically for native Spanish speakers.
I specifically enjoy helping with homework or test prep, where the student has specific problems to work through. Otherwise, I can explain basic concepts and give practice problems to work through. I really like to work through a lot of examples because without practice it can be difficult to apply.

I graduated from Jefferson High School in the spring of 2012. I now attend Indiana University-Purdue University in Fort Wayne. I have two younger siblings and 4 younger step-siblings that I have helped with their homework, or helped them better understand material assigned to them. Their ages range from 8-17. I know how to explain certain subjects in multiple ways to ensure that eventually the student will understand the material. I am very patient, and I understand that some people learn at slower rates than others. I am majoring in nursing, though I considered teaching English before making this decision. Purdue Jazz Band Trombonist

I have been playing trombone since I was in 6th grade. My experience has included styles of playing such as jazz, orchestral, wind symphonic, and marching band. I was the principal trombonist in the top orchestra and wind symphony at Carmel High School during my junior and senior year as well as the lead trombonist in the top jazz band. I played at the National Orchestra Cup in 2009 in New York City as well as the Midwest Clinic in Chicago in 2009. I took private lessons with Loy Hetrick of Carmel Indiana.

I like to try to explain concepts in a way that I believe my student will find easy to understand. If I find that they do not understand I will try a different method of explaining the concept. I often like to use sketches so students can visualize what is being taught or story problems so they can see some practical applications of how the concept can be used to solve problems.
Having enjoyed mathematics and especially calculus in high school, I decided to major in Mechanical Engineering so that I would be able to enjoy the many math courses that were required. I excelled in Calculus during my studies at Pensacola Christian College. In most cases, the student just needs a clearer explanation than his/her book or instructor is providing. Also, I like to create visual examples that make an abstract concept into something more practical. A thorough explanation coupled with examples and practice, practice, practice usually prove to help tremendously.
