My classroom experience with Special Education started while in college at Illinois State University, where I gained very valuable experience teaching in a variety of classrooms. For one semester, I taught in a junior high life-skills classroom where we practiced daily living skills and went out into the community so the students could practice skills such as locating items in a store, paying with money, and crossing the street. Then I spent my Fieldbase semester at two different schools. The first one was 4th and 5th grade students with learning disabilities. While I like students to know that I am an expert in my subject field, I also want them to take the opportunity to learn critical thinking skills. I want them to gather information, ask questions and break things down to a level that makes sense for them. With that being said, I believe I have a teaching style that resembles that of a facilitator. The overall challenge is to help students reach their capacity for independent action, initiative, and responsibility. In college, I was a peer tutor in Math, Physics, Biology, and Chemistry. I have sub-taught for CUSD 5, and CUSD 87, for 3 years. I have a Illinois Type 09 Certification, which is currently valid in McLean County. I have good grammar skills, and very good mathematical skills. I completed 2 semesters of Organic chemistry, 3 quarters of College Algebra, and 2 quarters of College Calculus (single variable only) I have had a lot of experience working with autistic students, behavior disorder students, and LD students, also.
