Writing is one of my top subjects! Writing is like construction: if you don't have the right tools your structure will fall apart.

My style of teaching is real-world understanding and application firmly based on theory. In other words, I teach how to accomplish each element, but why it is important to do so. In my instruction, I establish goals and create achievable steps for the student to follow in order to achieve those goals.
I spent over 20 years as a graphic designer for various colleges and universities. In that time I used my office as an educational opportunity for my student assistants, but I always had the desire to teach. In 2011 I returned to school for my Teacher Certification in English Language Arts and Reading grades 8-12. I have since then taught English I, II, III and IV, Recovery Reading for 9th and 10th graders, as well as Art and Yearbook. My experience has taught me that every child has a tremendous capacity to learn and excel, but not all know how to unlock that capacity. My job ... read more

Writing is one of my top subjects! My award-winning writing career spans 38 years. Accolades include a Katie Award and three “Council for Advancement and Support of Education” awards. I have been published in national newspapers and magazines, as well as on-line. My syndicated column, “Lone Star Legends,” has appeared in 48 newspapers throughout Texas. Additionally, I have worked as a journalist in radio and television broadcast (most recently with CSPAN). Teaching experience includes having supervised writing labs at St. Thomas University -- Miami, Fla. (1987-88), Mississippi State University (1988-89) and Texas A&M University (1989-93). I have also taught composition at the fifth through eighth grade levels and currently tutor 10th and 11th grade foreign exchange students in all areas related to writing. Additionally, the College Board contracts me each year to assess essays students submit as part of their SAT testing. In a similar fashion, Pearson Education, Inc. employs me each year to assess essays students -- grades 4, 5, 7, 9 and 10 – submit as part of standardized testing in the states of Arizona, California, Texas and West Virginia.

I am foremost a writer whose 38-year, award-winning career is rooted in journalism. However, I also have an extensive teaching background. I have taught writing labs at St. Thomas University – Miami, Florida (1987-88), Mississippi State University (1988-89) and Texas A&M University (1989-93); and I currently offer tutoring services to 10th- and 11th-grade foreign exchange students from all over the world. Some of my tutoring involves preparing students to take the college-entrance SAT. I am particularly qualified to do this from a writing perspective, because the College Board contracts me each year to assess the essays students submit as part of their SAT testing. In a similar fashion, Pearson Education, Inc. employs me each year to assess essays that students -- grades 4, 5, 7, 9 and 10 – submit as part of standardized testing in the states of Arizona, California, Tex ... read more

All kids can learn no matter what their disability!

I have been teaching special education for over 6 years. I've taught low functioning students with Learning disabilities, autism, MR, etc... Some kids learn at a different pace and some progress, while it may not be much, opens the door to confidence and hope. I will work hard and help your child to succeed where they can and build character along the way. We as educators need to teach the whole child.
Patient. I work at the students pace and tighten the rigor where the student can succeed.

More About This Tutor...

Brain-based, student-centered
I'm Ebony! I graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor's in Cognitive Studies and Education, and earned a Master's degree with distinction in Curriculum and Instruction. I am a Cognitive Specialist/neuroeducator whose sole objective is bridging the divide between the student and the content, using methods based on the individual's learning style. As I think back to when I have achieved most success as a student, it was always because of a phenomenal educator who taught the content in ways that appealed to my learning style. I was immersed in the content, and I thrived because of it. I provide the same instructional strategies and experiences for my students, who vary from children with neurological differences such as Autism, Dyslexia, and other learning differences, to gifted students, to adults who never learned how to read or perform mathematics. My comments on tutoring Writing : Writing is one part talent to nine parts skill. Chances are you already have the one part talent - the rest can be learned!

I try to do some explication, and then have the student try some exercises or venture out on their own. In the cases of multiple sessions, I DO assign homefun (as opposed to homework), so that the student will have some experience when next we meet.
I am an experienced graphic and web designer. But in college I thought I was going to be either an English or History Professor, or an Attorney. That's why I studied lots of his History, English, and took the pre-law major Philosophy. I have several year of post-graduate classes as well. I started teaching Graphic Design in 2002, and brought into that Web Design, along with the skills that accompany them - HTML and CSS. I have even designed signs, and love it!

I have been a freelanced graphic designer for many years now. I have a vast knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite. I know a thing, or two about illustrating. I was the youngest in my class to graduate under the Visual Communications curriculum. And I also possess other sets of skills, which I would be happy to show off (And teach).
