I was asked to apply for an undergraduate teaching assistant position at The University of Montana. The following year, I assisted in the laboratory sections of Anatomy and Physiology, teaching basic biology and advanced anatomy and physiology (A&P). I now serve as an instructor, teaching two sections of A&P. In addition, I have served as a student advisor, guiding incoming freshman and assisting them in schedule structure and course loads. I have discovered a love and aptitude for teaching. At times it can frustrate and challenge even the most patient instructors. I greatly enjoy teaching. Much of my style is entertaining and process oriented in nature. Story, metaphor and an understanding of the student having “the idea before the subject being taught” are vital. For me, the underlying concepts are of vital importance before true learning can occur. Knowing what a “mammal” is comes before knowing how we classify “mammals”. Generally, I am able to meet students where they are and utilize “foreword chaining” learning styles with frequent, non boring interactions to progress learning. Rote memory rarely works, but pneumonic, metaphor and story often do. I am very aware of differing learning styles, as well as differing modalities (visual, auditory, kinetic) of learning. My teaching style has been a very hands-on approach in the past due to my experience with environmental education. As a tutor, I strive to offer my assistance in a way children can understand. I was a substitute teacher assistant for children with special needs ages 3-21, on and off for the past 6 years. I have always possessed a love for and interest in the phenomena of our natural world. This has driven me to obtain a B.S. degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry.
