I use an intercultural (as opposed to assimilationist) perspective, knowing that language teachers also teach culture; this is not only desirable, it is probably unavoidable. We cannot allow the material on testing instruments to dictate the entire scope of what we teach. I still find it difficult to convince many people that literacy, strictly speaking, is usually not the challenge adult ELLs face. I enjoy being able to work with children and being able to positively impact their lives whether that be through empowering them to succeed or teaching new skills.
